The Fruit Belt Rail Trail is a 2-mile rail-trail with a crushed limestone surface in Oshtemo Township, Michigan.
About the Route
The Fruit Belt Rail Trail is an out-and-back trail with trailheads on Erie St. and on S 6th St., both of which have paved parking lots. There are benches, safety fencing, and signage along the route with trail markers every quarter mile. Native wildflowers along the trail support pollinator and wildlife habitat.
Dogs are allowed. Pets must be on a leash.
Connections
The Van Buren Trail runs along 14 miles of the same historic railroad corridor. There are plans to connect the trail with the Kal-Haven Trail.
Trail History
The Fruit Belt Rail Trail runs along the former corridor of the Michigan Central Railroad. In the early 1900s, the railroad connected Kalamazoo and South Haven, where passengers and fruit were ferried by steamships across Lake Michigan to Chicago.
The Fruit Belt Rail Trail runs between Erie St. and a dead end 0.3 miles west of S 6th St. in Oshtemo Township, Michigan.
Parking is available at the trailheads on Erie St. and S 6th St.
