Inspired by New York's High Line, the Underline is envisioned as a 10-mile linear park in the underutilized space beneath the Miami's Metrorail line. The park will act as a community gathering space and provide access to nature and opportunities for walking and biking in an otherwise car-centric city.
The first phase opened in 2021. Stretching seven blocks, or about a half-mile, this phase known as the Brickell Backyard offers Miamians and other visitors a tantalizing taste of what's to come. In addition to the walking and biking path, the space is organized in a series of outdoor "rooms", each with their own character and programming. At the River Room, folks can relax along the Miami River; at the Urban Gym, fitness stations, s running track, basketball and soccer amenities invite visitors to get active; the Promenade features a sound stage and plaza where free cultural and wellness events are held. It also has tables for work or play, and a 50-foot long, wheelchair-accessible, community dining table. The Oolite Room boasts of a butterfly garden and seating on oolite boulders.
The second phase will see the Underline extended to SW 19th Street, followed by a third phase which will stretch a final seven miles to the Dadeland South Station. The Underline is managed by the Underline Conservancy, which includes Friends of the Underline, the group founded by Meg Daly that has advocated and raised funds for the project from its inception.
The Underline is part of the the East Coast Greenway as well as the cross-county Miami LOOP, a 225-mile developing active transportation network championed by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and other partners.
Phase one is located beneath the Brickell Metrorail Station. There is metered parking along SW 1st Avenue, which parallels the Underline.
Underline is expanding, you could ride from Brickell to Vizcaya and back now, it’s planning to expand to even further and the roads are really smooth and nice, highly recommend if you want a fast smooth uninterrupted ride amidst the middle of the city
