The northernmost segment of Durham's North-South Greenway, Warren Creek Trail provides a serene hiking or biking experience and access to a neighborhood park.
The trail extends between Horton Road and Stadium Drive, through Whippoorwill Park and largely following the course of its namesake creek. Beginning at Horton Road, the paved trail travels through cuts a 10-foot wide swath through the riparian woods surrounding Warren Creek. Leafy branches form a canopy above while foliage blankets the ground on the sides of the path.
The trail emerges from the woods into the Whippoorwill Park parking area. There turn left and walk or ride the path between the parking spaces and the split rail fence until you come to the tennis courts. There are benches, bike parking and a water fountain at this point. Turn left and continue traveling between the tennis courts until the trail becomes like it was before: bounded by trees and greenery through which one might occasionally spot the creek.
The trail ends at Stadium Drive, where a concrete sidepath continues the journey south.
Parking is available at Whippoorwill Park (1632 Rowemont Dr, Durham). In addition to the tennis courts, water fountains and benches mentioned above, the park also features restrooms, playground, picnic tables and grills.
Short trail best for walking. Lots of places where tree roots have split the pavement making a very bumpy ride. Connects through park to Stadium trail but it quickly becomes a ride on city sidewalks. Not great for those looking for a long ride away from cars
Nice greenway with a cool bridge over some wetlands. Drainage problems have largely been fixed, a couple of spots have “root bumps” in the pavement.
