The Sandy Creek Trail cuts a leafy course through Sandy Creek Park, stretching between the park entrance and Pickett Road. It is asphalt-paved, relatively flat and suitable for a variety of uses, including walking, biking and skating. The trail mostly parallels the creek, which can be seen in glimpses through the foliage.
While it's all greenery today, Sandy Creek Park actually occupies the site of a former wastewater treatment facility that stopped operating in the 1960s. The city saw an opportunity to turn the abandoned site into something beautiful and restore the Sandy Creek wetland. Echoes of its industrial past can be found in the remaining structures, including a gas tank near the parking lot, as well as the interpretive signage provided.
Sandy Creek Trail is part of the developing New Hope Creek Greenway system in Durham. There are plans to extend the paved portion of the trail another 0.75 miles from Pickett to Cornwallis Road.
There is parking in Sandy Creek Park (3510 Sandy Creek Dr, Durham, NC). There's also a picnic shelter and restrooms at this site.
