Wheeling Heritage Trails

new things on the trail

November, 2016 by mistypullen13

When you go north of the heritage port in Wheeling, the cracks have been paved, and where there was a go around, is now done and you don't have to go around anything trying to figure out how to get back. I wouldn't go past that point before it reopened(would go to the Local grocery before turning around) due to having extra wheels.

Great Allegheny Passage

Exceptional Trail

November, 2016 by steve plattner

In October due to a weird work schedule, I got on the trail at Connellsville, rode to Pittsburgh, took Amtrak to Washington, DC, then rode back via the C&O Towpath and joined the GAP again at Cumberland. Did it in six days pulling my BOB trailer the whole way.

The GAP trail is terrific. Very well-maintained, seems very popular. I encountered all sorts of people, including many riding the entire Pittsburgh to Cumberland or on to Washington route. The beginning it uphill for nearly twenty miles, but very do-able if you set your pace. The Mason Dixon line monument is wonderful, as is the tunnel nearby. Lots of great scenery and wildlife--even saw 1 porcupine and a black bear darted across the trail. I stayed at the Ramada in Cumberland (fine) and had a great Italian dinner nearby, then stayed in Meyerdale the next night before heading back into Connellsville where I stayed off the trail a bit at the Melody Motor Lodge--a throwback to another era but fine. Parked my car near the Amtrak station at the Connellsville PD--they just asked that I leave them a note with my contact info just in case. I really enjoyed the more industrial areas as well as the natural ones--McKeesport, Homestead, etc. Lots of history and beauty.

I would rate the GAP among my top four bike trails--with the Katy in MO, the Greenbrier in WV, and the shorter but beautiful VA Creeper--especially east of Damascus.

Brooke Pioneer Trail

Brooke/ Wheeling Heritage Trails

November, 2016 by christy17

Started at the Pike Island Locks and Dam. My son and I went north and turned around where the Brooke trail veers around the old Wheeling-Pitt property. The Wheeling side was in good shape (a lot of blown garbage from the nearby roadway). On the Brooke section, plenty of benches, rest stops, and one historical section which was interesting. Well marked, Brooke side had downed trees on path (small ones). Enjoyable day, not bad on bad knees.

Sheepskin Trail

Trail is open and historic

November, 2016 by biagiowallace

I have ridden the GAP numerous times but have never ventured onto the Sheepskin Trail. This short spur off the GAP was a very pleasant surprise. As the reviewer stated below there is a large' graveled lay down yard' a mile onto the trail but with a little effort you are able to get back onto the trail (bearing left). The pleasant surprise is that at the end of the trail is the historic town of Dunbar. From it's coke ovens, glass sculptures and museum at the end of the trail this ride was very rewarding. I strongly recommend the visit. The trail is supposed to be undergoing some improvements in the future with a possible extension to WV. The most surprising item to note is who donated the valuable large sculpture at the museum. It is a rewarding and surprising valuable excursion.

Blackwater Canyon Trail

Labor Day

November, 2016 by george.dasher

We rode this trail just before Labor Day. Parked at Hedricks and rode up, had a beer or two (and excellent crossaints (however you spell them)) at the Purple Fiddle in Thomas, and drifted all the way back down to our cars. It was great ride, and the trail was well maintained--unlike our previous experience on this trail. We will most likely do this again--and again.

Great Allegheny Passage

Views, views, views.

October, 2016 by garykeese_tl

I rode the C and O/ GAP in October 2016. It is one of the best rail trails in the USA. THE views between CUMBERLAND and Ohiopyle are fab, especially in the fall colors.
Although they are very different, the C and O/ GAP make a great 330 mile car free week-10 days. Lots to see and do along the trail, so take your time.

Get reservations for Falling Water, Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece near Ohiopyle.

If you haven't been, allow a day or two to see Pittsburgh. Take the furnicular for a birds eye view of downtown.

Blackwater Canyon Trail

Great vistas

This is one of the great trails for breathtaking scenery. Started in Parsons WV and rode to Thomas WV. The ride from Parsons to Hendricks is paved once in Hendricks the trail ascends to Thomas. About two miles past Hendrick the trail get's a little rough and is not maintained but the struggle is worth the views. Once you get to Douglas Falls the ride into Thomas is fairly easy. Thomas is a great mountain town with all amenities. This trail would be outstanding if maintained but it is definitely one of the best trails in the country.

Montour Trail

Beautiful

Great place to run as opposed to the streets of West Mifflin. Started at the south east trail head, which has moved about 0.1 miles due to construction, and ran 2.5 miles out then back for a total of 5 miles. The trail was great and it felt like I was running downhill both ways.

Top Bike Tour Year Oct 2016

October, 2016 by tjprosseda

My personal goal for this year was to take my first bike tour of the GAP with 3 other women and all of us are 60+. Let me say this trip riding the GAP was the most awesome exciting invigorating life experience for all of us. Loved getting an early start on the trail to see a lot of wildlife every day, the beautiful views riding along the water, basking in the great weather on the bridges and let's not forget about passing through the tunnels! The people on and off the trail were friendly, helpful and cheerfully offered advice to all of us. While the first part of the trail was a challenge (Frostburg to the Summit) and was foggy in some areas, it didn't stop us as we wanted more! At all of our lodging sites, the owners were helpful and accommodating. I'm ready to go back!

Montour Trail

Hope the rest is better.

My wife and I started at the end of the trail. While the trail was nice the detours on the road was not what we expected. My wife is not comfortable on the road and we did not expect it. The detour around mile 36, I think, was not marked on the road and did not know where to go so we turned around and returned.

As I said earlier the trail was nice and enjoyed the scenery, just did not care for the road and detours because of trail construction. Later we will try the rest of the trail and hope to find more of the great parts of the trail.

North Bend Rail Trail

Central Station Tunnel #6 2297 ft long

October, 2016 by tracy11

Today 10/11/16 traveled thirteen miles on Rt 50 from Ellenboro, WV toward Clarksburg, WV to Central Station Exit. Then went about two miles to Tunnel road on right. Went about half mile to trail entrance on right. From trail entrance to tunnel #6 was about three to four hundred yards. Trail was muddy in places due to recent rail. Inside tunnel was smooth. Lights are needed to go through the tunnel. The tunnel is straight and you can see light at the end. Tunnel road is now being used by fracking companies and there are flaggers to go through. It probably would be better to wait till they are done but I had driven for 45 min to get there and they were very helpful in letting me pass. Nice tunnel to see.
