We met with a construction crew today. They are restoring the bridges, clearing fells, and adding gravel. Completion is expected June 2021.
This rail trail starts at Zane's Landing Park on the East Bank of the Muskingum River just north of the city of Zanesville's Y Bridge in downtown. Its main purpose seems to be to connect the city's youth athletic fields with downtown Zanesville. The trail parallels the river bank and heads north toward Jaycee Riverside Park and ends at Washington Street in Washington Township. The trail is flat and paved. The surface from Zane's Landing to the boat launch in Riverside Park is smooth and fairly new. The rest of the trail north of the boat launch is bumpy and jarring as there are a lot of cracks within the pavement. Hopefully this section that parallels most of the athletic fields in Riverside Park will be resurfaced next year. I was the lone cyclist on the trail on this Fall Tuesday afternoon, however, I encountered perhaps a dozen pedestrians out walking on the trail during my ride. I'd be curious to see how busy the trail becomes in the evenings or on Saturday afternoons when there are numerous youth soccer or baseball games going on in Riverside Park.
I'd like to add that should the Muskingum County Commissioners and the citizens of the county decide to connect the Zane's Landing Trail with the Muskingum Recreational Trail running south out of Dresden you'd develop a beautiful regional destination trail.
This fully paved trail is flat with gentle curves, a view of wetlands and occasional fields. Birds and scurrying squirrels make this trail fun to walk. Enjoying the outdoors with young and old as well as family mascots makes this a fun getaway.
Been riding the Parkersburg end of the North Bend trail, just wanted to update fellow riders of utility work on the trail. Trail was great until about the mile 6 marker then it was a mess and we had to walk our bikes around the equipment and get on the hardtop road and we finally turned around and rode back until we found the trail on the other side of the construction area.
We live in Dover (about 40 minutes from Cambridge), but my husband works in Cambridge, so he uses this trail often; sometimes at lunch or after work to both ride and walk. He suggested it to my friend and me as we have been doing one "girls bike trail day" weekly. She liked it so well that she took her husband to ride the trail a couple of days later. It is such a nice area and trail is in good shape.... a couple of rough areas, but they have patched them which makes it smoother. Really enjoyed this trail and it will definitely be on our "girls bike trail day" again.
We hiked to the Moonville Tunnel using the road- found there was on-site parking. But the tunnel was great! Next time we will walk farther down the trail past the tunnel. Tried to jump on the actual trail at one point- but the bridge was out. Picked up the trail in another location- was grassy but recently cut. Pretty and easy to hike. Definitely not for road bikes. Trail came out at School House road. Looking forward to future improvements!
We ended up not riding this trail, but had a nice drive along back roads along the river searching for parking. We stopped and walked part. Overgrown with grass. Would be more appropriate for a mountain bike.
My husband and I started at the main pavilion at North Bend State Park and walked to mile marker 30 before turning back. Great exercise for my recent complete ACL reconstruction, nice and flat. Bonus was walking through Tunnels #12 & #13!
I biked the North Bend Railtrail this past week. My summary:
Happy Valley to Petroleum: trail quite manageable, however some areas have gravel that is too large for a rail-trail, but not quite as large as comment below.
Cairo-Ellenboro: very nice, smooth
Westbound Wolf Summit- Ellenboro: first 16mi to Smithburg characterized by very soft surface with numerous large vehicle ruts in the trail—very little gravel-based portions. Would recommend for only the most hardy of bikers.
Smithburg- Pennsboro: smooth and in good condition
Pennsboro Tunnel (tunnel 8)– MM36: a total disaster—gravel the size of rail ballast. Whoever decided to cover the trail with ballast-sized gravel has never ridden a bike on such! Remainder to Ellenboro manageable.
Great Ride! Flat ride. Very enjoyable. Started in Nelsonville at Rocky Boot. Lots of wildlife on this June day. Cool under the canopy. Hot in the sun. Fellow bikers friendly. And courteous. Will definitely return!
This trail was a real treat! We started at the east end trailhead and at first I wasn’t impressed. The commercial area only lasted for a few miles. Next up was Ohio U which was beautiful. This area wasn’t shaded so bring plenty of water. After passing the school, we entered a gorgeous section with a tree canopy. The birds were very active and vocal. Nelsonville was an interesting old town. We rode the gravel bikes, but could have easily ridden road bikes. The trail was in great shape.
This trail was full of birds and the smell of honeysuckle. The asphalt path was extremely well-maintained. We brought our gravel bikes, but could have easily ridden our road bikes.
