Panhandle Trail

warning.

May, 2020 by jlhendricks1965

We ride multiple times per week between Oakdale and Burgettstown. This morning we decided to do the short ride between Oakdale and Rennerdell and then head to McDonald. By the time we got to Greggs Station both my husband and I had flat tires with multiple holes in them. Something has to be either in the trail parking lot (we normally park across the street at the brewery) or somewhere on the trail.

Panhandle Trail

Great ride

Washington County portion is in excellent condition!!! Allegheny portion is not paved with a few bumps. Still good trail to ride. I highly recommend riding.

Great trail

May, 2020 by wjlarkin

Paved, smooth, wide with just enough elevation change to get the heart going! Started at Lisbon trail head, so most of the elevation change is front loaded in the first 6 miles-allowing you to cruise backwhile coasting if you wish. Wildflowers were out. So very pretty first 4 miles. Spent some tome cruising the little town of washingtonville, so ended up 28 mile round trip. Pretty crowded from people wscaping Covid quarantine, but no masks for these patriots.downhill the last

Montour Trail

Montour Trail/Panhandle connector.

April, 2020 by jlhendricks1965

The Trail currently has an area near the Panhandle connector that is not rideable due to the I-576 construction. You can push your bike thru the gravel to get thru it. (I think it’s around mile 17) Also if you get off on the Panhandle connector it is torn up and rough so be careful. Just last week they added another area of the I-576 construction where there is more gravel that you have to push the bike thru. However when you are 1/2 way thru you can see the Panhandle trail and ride thru the construction road to it. There are no signs there but if you turn left you are heading toward the McDonald station then on to Oakdale. If you turn right you are heading toward Midway.

Panhandle Trail

Great trail

Other than a few puddles, the ride from Oakdale to MCDonald is awesome. It starts out as crushed limestone and then becomes paved. It’s also flat so once you are on the paved section it’s a great place to take kids to learn to ride or skate. From McDonald to Burgettstown there are quite a few hills so it’s a great workout.

Montour Trail - Airport Connector

pros and the cons

April, 2020 by jlhendricks1965

If you start at the airport a short portion of the route is on Clinton Rd which is a very busy road with no berm to ride on. Definitely ride this part at your own risk. Once you turn onto McCaslin Rd (right past the Dollar General) you pass a few houses and the road turns into a bike trail to Enlow. The trail is paved. It starts out smooth but about half way thru the pavement gets a little rough but it is better than a lot of trails. You are mostly going downhill in this direction but there are several hills. Once you reach Enlow you are back on a road but it’s a nice residential street. When you reach the end there is a 5 way intersection and you can cross to get on the Montour Trail. Note: if you are going in the other direction there are numerous hills and you will get a good workout.

Clearview Park Trail

It's not the best or nicest trail I've been on but it serves it's purpose. Clearview Ave on one side and Crafton Blvd on the other.

Panhandle Trail

A decent spot

March, 2020 by timmy0728

Parked at the lot near Colliers Road.
Ran East, towards Pittsburgh.
1st half mile or so is hard packed dirt/rocks. Relatively smooth.
Then once in PA, the trail is paved.
Mostly level and only small inclines.
Ok scenary, the garbage dumped on the one hillside is an eyesore, but if you're looking for some used tires...
The trail follows along a stream which is nice. Saw a couple squirrels while running.
So, as always, if in the area and want to get some miles in, give this trail a try.
And you can always tell your friends and family that you ran all the way from West Virginia to Pennsylvania.
Just dont tell them its only about a half mile.
Enjoy.

Best Trail Ever

This is the best trail I have ever ridden!

Great Allegheny Passage

Pittsburgh to Cumberland

November, 2019 by tom.peterson19

We split it into two days. Pretty easy ride. A bit uphill until the ECD but not too bad being that it’s very gradual. Big time downhill into Cumberland after The Divide. Take time to stop in Ohiopyle, it’s worth the time and the Yough river is awesome there. They have a couple decent outfitters there and a good place to grab a bite to refuel. Continued on to DC after, four days total. Trail can be pretty “rooty” in places after meeting up with the Towpath.

Annual race held here-November 2019

November, 2019 by vicki1960

Grin & Bear It race held annually in November to benefit the trail. 300 participants in 3 different races....half-marathon, 10k and 5k. Started at the Leetonia trailhead.
Weather conditions were terrible. Cold and damp since it rained all night. Then add in some wind. But this year was a record breaking attendance to benefit the trail.
New parking lot added which is called the Franklin Square Parking area. The trail was newly paved the first few miles at the Leetonia end. It was much needed!
