Marion County Trail (MCTrail)

Great Bike Trail

July, 2020 by jbrewer0226

We took the whole family biking on this trail today. It is a very nice pathway that is paved. Our kids range from 1 up to 5. Our 5 year old was able to ride her tricycle and the 2 smaller kids rode in a pull behind trailer. My 5 year old was able to ride her tricycle for 2 miles with some stops.

North Bend Rail Trail

Could be a great ride...

June, 2020 by jtkilcoin

I biked the North Bend Railtrail this past week. My summary:

Happy Valley to Petroleum: trail quite manageable, however some areas have gravel that is too large for a rail-trail, but not quite as large as comment below.

Cairo-Ellenboro: very nice, smooth

Westbound Wolf Summit- Ellenboro: first 16mi to Smithburg characterized by very soft surface with numerous large vehicle ruts in the trail—very little gravel-based portions. Would recommend for only the most hardy of bikers.

Smithburg- Pennsboro: smooth and in good condition

Pennsboro Tunnel (tunnel 8)– MM36: a total disaster—gravel the size of rail ballast. Whoever decided to cover the trail with ballast-sized gravel has never ridden a bike on such! Remainder to Ellenboro manageable.

West Fork Trail

Beautiful flora but not good for biking

June, 2020 by jimwaite03

I biked on this trail in August 2019. The flora is highly varied and very beautiful. However, the trail is poor for biking. It was miserable biking on a hybrid, and I do not think it would be any more enjoyable on a mountain bike. The trail surface is not mostly ballast. The surface varies from ballast to deep mud to uncut vegetation. In some sections I was riding through thick grass and weeds. The poor trail surface forced me to keep my eyes glued to the trail making it hard to enjoy the beautiful flora. This trail was in better shape years ago. Durbin does not have an attractive Main Street corridor. It is depressed and has few amenities.

Wheeling Heritage Trails

Great trail but don't ride a road bike.

June, 2020 by mdrennard

I started at the southern-most part of the trail (48th St & Water St) and rode north. Despite the fact that the trail was paved, there were a lot of cracks and bumps in the pavement. After about 15 minutes I wished I brought my mountain bike rather than my road bike. Once I got through the downtown Wheeling area and north, the pavement smoothed out. I got as far north as Warwood and had to turn around because the weather was beginning to get bad. If you plan on riding this trail, be aware that it is rather bumpy for a road bike with no suspension.

Deckers Creek Trail

lots of elevation and beautiful scenery

June, 2020 by ryan.strother

This trail probably has the most elevation I’ve ridden on a trail yet! From Morgantown to Reedsville increases elevation more than the other way. It was a little rockier than I would have liked in certain areas.

Brooke Pioneer Trail

Alert - trail closure

June, 2020 by cornells_tl

The first 2.5 miles of trail south of Wellsburg are closed as of June 2020. A bridge is being built across the river. The trail is torn up and being used for contractor access. Bridge completion is expected in 2022, and the trail will need to be rebuilt/restored.

Route 2 is two lanes with narrow shoulders and a hill in either direction. The speed limit is 55, 45 through the construction zone. I felt comfortable riding on the roadway, but many people won't. I wouldn't recommend that casual or beginner cyclists ride the road.

Panhandle Trail

PA trail is 5 stars-WV trail 1

May, 2020 by cyburgh

Rode the trail May 2020 & would ride the entire trail that’s in PA again. The WV part of the trail is so rocky and bumpy and has so much broken glass on it I’ll never ride there again.

Panhandle Trail

warning.

May, 2020 by jlhendricks1965

We ride multiple times per week between Oakdale and Burgettstown. This morning we decided to do the short ride between Oakdale and Rennerdell and then head to McDonald. By the time we got to Greggs Station both my husband and I had flat tires with multiple holes in them. Something has to be either in the trail parking lot (we normally park across the street at the brewery) or somewhere on the trail.

Panhandle Trail

Great ride

May, 2020 by bksmith45713

Washington County portion is in excellent condition!!! Allegheny portion is not paved with a few bumps. Still good trail to ride. I highly recommend riding.

Deckers Creek Trail

Good Trail

May, 2020 by mountaineer4life

We enjoyed this trail and my wife and I walked and the kids rode their bikes. The only down side was the amount of snakes we saw. I realize that it is spring and snakes are going to be out but there seemed to be a lot of them today.

Otter Creek Trail

Perfection

May, 2020 by eronhc_tl

Started from the north trailhead on a beautiful Mother's Day. Had the family, 10 yo, 14 yo, Mom and Dad. Crossed the bridge and started off. It was a little muddy at the start, need good boots or waterproof shoes. Also there were some downed trees to maneuver around and some small slopes up and down but quickly levels off. Nothing too difficult. Had fun on the many stream crossings, some flowing pretty good. Saw chipmunks, birds, and other wildlife. The snake along the trail gave us a thrill. We did see quite a few other families making a day of it. Had a picnic style lunch a couple of miles in. Hiked a couple more hours and turned back. This a beautiful and peaceful hike that is not too difficult. One of my favorite hikes. Hope to do some overnight camping there soon.

Hawks Nest Rail Trail

Great short trail with beautiful views

May, 2020 by mkfarren

Trail is in great shape even after all the rain. Was pretty busy but not a problem at all. Gravel bikes to the bottom then took Hawks Nest Connector to Fayette Station road and back. Great ride, a lot of downed trees on Connector and a couple small slips, but passible if you don’t mind a little hike n bike. I thought Connector would be more rail trail but a lot of it is narrow and rocky single track. My gravel bike handled it OK but a mountain bike would’ve been better for that section.
