Gateway Greenway Description

Although less than a mile long, the Gateway Greenway's location in downtown Huntsville means it offers many interesting and unique things to see and do. The trail begins in Veterans Park, dedicated to honoring veterans and those who have lost their lives in military service. The park will feature three sculptures of local veterans who represent the park's theme of courage, sacrifice and duty.

A trail spur in the park takes you to the Huntsville Depot, which was completed in 1860 as part of the Memphis & Charleston Railroad. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the museum it houses explores the railway's impact on the town, including how the depot once served as a prison for captured Confederate soldiers when it was occupied by Union troops during the Civil War.

Midway, you will come to the Garden of Life and Remembrance, just off Meridian Street. The garden is dedicated to those who have survived gynecologic cancers, as well as a special place to remember loved ones lost to cancer.

You'll continue along the east side of Meridian Street, past the playground at Bud Cramer Park, to end your journey at Pratt Street.

Parking and Trail Access

A gravel parking lot is available off Meridian Street.

Good for Walking, Not So Good for Bikes

This Greenway is really a path around a city park which contains a nice, extensive Memorial to Veterans. There is a nice parking lot near the middle of the trail. The greenway goes by the railroad track and under the highway overpass, going around the Veterans Memorial past various displays, memorials and extensive fountains. It is a short but great walk. For bikes, however, it is not so great. Many of the sidewalks are rather narrow, weaving around the memorials. I found no signage identifying it as a greenway or path but it is so short and in a compact area, you really can't get lost. I will go back for the walk but will leave my bike at home.
