The Southern Boulevard Trail follows its namesake roadway through the suburban heart of Rio Rancho, providing five miles of paved pathway that serves as a useful path for transportation and exercise. The eastern end of the trail features a wide array of shops and restaurants, with even more along the state highway (accessible via the New Mexico 528 Rec Path). The western end of the trail is much more residential in nature, with the trail serving as a means for residents in this rapidly-growing community to access local parks and schools.
The majority of the trail is flat and paved with asphalt, ranging in width from eight to ten feet. A short section west of Unser Boulevard is lacking in these wider accommodations, but is still accessible via sidewalk before the asphalt trail picks up again - the Unser Boulevard Trail North provides a nice sidepath option along that busy commercial and residential corridor. Due to the nature of the trail, the Southern Boulevard Trail does feature many road crossings, so users looking for a more removed and secluded trail experience should probably look elsewhere.
Parking is available near the western end of the trail at Rainbow Park, located at 301 Southern Boulevard SE. Additional parking can be found at numerous shops and restaurants along the route of the trail; be sure to follow any posted parking signs and regulations.
