Banks-Vernonia State Trail

maintenance is an embarrassment

August, 2023 by fgladics

It has been 6 years since I last ride the Banks to Stub Stewart State Park section. As before the transitions on and off bridges are abysmal. The bridges are 4 to 6 inches higher than the trail surface. Strongly advise riders slow way down when approaching bridges. Riding surface continues to deteriorate with longitudinal cracks wide enough to catch a 19 mm tire if not paying attention. Pavement is breaking up in places. That’s the bad. Maintenance appears to be painting white paint to highlight the more dangerous roots The good is the scenery once into the frosted parts is truly beautiful. And the sour face

Willapa Hills State Park Trail

west end

We only road for about 10 miles on the far west end. Trial was paved but turned to gravel. Needed to bring my pruners for parts due to overgrown bushes. Otherwise good rude

This was a very nice trail to ride with my 7 year old! It was a clean, family friendly and beautiful scene of the beach!

Nice easy walk, and interesting placards to read. It is also an awesome place to walk your dog.

Willapa Hills State Park Trail

Nice-ish trail

July, 2023 by bethredeker1

We rode the trail for 9 miles out. It began paved and remained that way for about 5.5 miles or so. During that time, there were several areas of concern. The large divider stake (most were yellow) at the center of the trail by the ends where the road intersects…one was completely missing which is very dangerous as the bottom components were still intact. Also the bridges had very large lips on them, so we got off our bikes at almost all of the bridges. When it turns to gravel it is pretty nice for about 3 miles or so. We turned around at that point as the gravel became thicker and more difficult to maneuver.

Astoria Riverwalk

Terrible!

This is short and dangerous, especially for narrower tires. Gaps between pavement are very wide and can easily catch a tire. Planks across wood bridges are also dangerously wide in parts. Path shared with a “live” trolly. Markings are confusing as to where bikes and trolly are expected to be. Transitions from path to apparent trolly track so narrow it requires getting off the bike.

A Lovely 8.5 Mile Ride to the Lighthouse and a Stellar Lookout

June, 2023 by vidmar

I love this trail. It is well-paved and meanders through headlands from town to town on the way to the North Head lighthouse. Along the way, you can see eagles, seabirds, and incredible kites. The view from the lighthouse is beautiful and worth the ride up the hill. Also, the view from the lookout is well worth the ride.

Astoria Riverwalk

wonderful!!

Let bed this beautiful ride along the Columbia! Not for narrow tires otherwise wide, easy and well paved! Very fun!!

Crown Zellerbach Trail

fun trail

June, 2023 by dawnolson34

We have electric bikes and we did almost the whole trail. It’s a little challenging in spots. The trail is mostly packed gravel and some pavement. One section somewhere close to the end someone’ put loose gravel on a huge hill and that was not fun. All and all we will be doing this trail again! Oh we seen a deer on the trail too.

Willapa Hills State Park Trail

first time with trailer an dogs

May, 2023 by thomas zepeda

Rode a road tandem pulling a trailer with two doges from Pe Ell to rainbow falls state park and back. Had a great time, but should have had our fat tire tandem. Our 700-35 tires on the loose gravel, apparently layer down on the wet areas, made the going more work than fun. My other issue was the barriers at the road crossings to keep motorized vehicles off the trail. They use 2 metal posts instead of 1. This is more difficult to navigate on a tandem especially pulling a trailer. All said I will h ride this trail again.
