Very Nice Trail That Flies Under the Radar

July, 2020 by pauljnobrega

Having already biked from Ottawa to Welda, I went from Welda to Humboldt round-trip so as to complete the last remaining segment of the trail. Technically, the section from Iola to Humboldt is the Southwind Trail Trail, however it functionally is an extension of the Prairie Spirit. Regardless, I remain impressed with the condition quality of today's 26 mile section. The trail was packed down with minimal loose gravel, so as to allow for a surprisingly smooth ride. Simply excellent condition. Considerably more tree cover than I expected as well, which was quite welcome on a hot day. Several sections had foliage covering the trail to create a tunnel effect, which was a treat. If you have the opportunity, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a trip on this very well-maintained rail trail.

Hidden Gem of a Trail

July, 2020 by pauljnobrega

Not realizing that the Prairie Spirit Trail stopped in Iola and transitioned into the Southwind Rail Trail from that point to Humboldt, I was surprised to see the Southwind sign after biking down from Welda. What a pleasant surprise it was. The trail is in excellent condition, packed down with minimal debris/rocks, and made for a reasonably smooth ride. More shade was provided by foliage than I expected, which helped keep me cool on a boiler of a day. Not sure who to thank for maintaining this trail so well, yet I hope they read this - I'm grateful.

Ottawa to Richmond in Good Shape

April, 2020 by pauljnobrega

First time on any section of this trail, and rode from Ottawa to Richmond and back. The trail is in good shape - no vegetation overgrowth, no trees blocking the path. Care should be taken when crossing roads, as there are some significant bumps at the intersection - if you don't stop or slow down significantly it could be problematic. The trailheads at Ottawa, Princeton, and Richmond all had working restrooms and maps. The only challenge with this trail is that it's not particularly scenic, however that's the nature of my home state and not on the folks who created and maintain the trail. It's flat, straight, and a great option for a safe and pleasant ride.

Great Trail!

First time riding this trail. Well maintained, very quiet trail. Rode Humboldt to Iola today, and only saw one other rider the whole time.

Pleasant Fall Ride

October, 2018 by jacmar1

Road this trail from Iola to Humboldt on a fall afternoon in 2018.Very well kept and actually met the individual who takes great pride in keeping up the trail. There are still many railroad features along the trail and the crushed surface is well maintained. Both Iola and Humboldt have several new restaurants and accommodations being renovated which makes staying in the area quite enjoyable

Nice ride

June, 2018 by fdowell

Rode this trail from Iola to Humbolt and back, and then stumble on the single track trail outside of Iola. That was really nice too! We camped in Humbolt and that was disappointing with the noise from a local plant and the bathrooms were quite dirty.

GREAT TRAIL EXPERIENCE

June, 2017 by kcwyks_tl

We took a ride from the trailhead at Princeton KS, about 17 miles to Garnett KS, where we ate lunch at a restaurant on the town square, and returned that afternoon. This trail has excellent surface condition, good vegetation control, safe bridges, and nice variety of scenery in open space and deep forest cover. Bathrooms and water available at Princeton, Richmond, and Garnett. Its a nice day trip from Kansas City to get out in the country.

Lehigh Portland Trails

You want it? Lehigh's got it!

April, 2017 by billsjunk20032003

The Lehigh Trail, at the south edge of Iola, KS has something for everyone. The main trail offers a hard-packed limestone screening surface, firm enough for hiking, biking, wheel chairs, and strollers, and is an excellent surface for the casual hiker/biker. For those who want something more challenging, there are single-track trails over rocks, through wooded areas, through tall grass, and along the edge of its namesake rock quarry. Lehigh has it all!

Ottawa to Garnett and back

Had a great ride yesterday on the trail. Met nice folks along the way. Trail is well maintained. If the state could do something about the 23 mph SSW headwind, that would be nice. :)

Plenty of place to stop and enjoy the prairie.

A Nice Trail

We rode this from Riverside Park south for about 3 miles. It is a flat trail that is maintained pretty well. We enjoyed it, but it was right at sundown so we couldn't go any farther..

Great rail trail

October, 2016 by mtrxcadman

After riding the Katy three times a buddy and I found out about this trail. I like it better even though it is much shorter. Rode it the first weekend of October. It was in GREAT shape. Whoever is in charge of maintaining it does a excellent job. Started in Humboldt and rode to Ottowa on a Saturday and rode back on Sunday. About 57 miles each way. Garnett is really the only place to get food halfway. Perfect weather when we went. I think there is a trail to Witchita from Ottowa. Will be looking for info on that and incorporate that with the next Prairie Spiirit ride

First Trail Ride

This is an amazing trail. VERY WELL maintained and very easy to ride. My friends and I rode this trail last week from Humbolt to Iola and from there rode the Prairie Spirit Trail on up to Colony where we had lunch. Then we rode back to Humbolt. I was so impressed, and it was so beautiful with the tree canopies and the big bridge. I am planning on coming back and bringing my husband so he can experience this beautiful trail too. I would give this trail 10 stars if I could.
