Quality Trail that needs completion

September, 2016 by mheidric

On September 15, 2016 I rode both parts of the trail from Lindsborg south and from McPherson north on a Cyclocross bike and found the trial in great shape especially on the Lindsborg side. The ride from the Lindsborg trail head is a beautiful one with lots of shade and from McPherson a wonderful ride through mostly farm land with lots of sunflowers along the trail. There is some crop waste on much of the trial on the McPherson side but nothing that caused any problems to ride or walk through. While it is a shame there is a 5 mile piece missing in the middle of the trail it is a short jog from the trail ends to old US 81 highway so a nice 12.5 mile ride one way is still available.

K-96 Bicycle Path

K-96 Bike Path is a great trail!

September, 2016 by jpwesley

I rode the entire trail this evening from Central Ave to N Oliver Ave and back. This trial is really great! Not too much elevation change since Kansas is flat, but there were a few spots that had some incline that made the legs burn a bit. The asphalt and concrete trail surface is in good shape. The only "bad" spot was a mile or so stretch just west of Cabelas outdoor store. The asphalt surface was a little uneven in a few spots but not bad at all. The places where you cross busy intersections have crosswalks and lights so that wasn't an issue. I rode in the evening after business hours so the parking lot entrances you cross on Cypress Dr and E 32nd weren't an issue. I'm guessing they might be earlier in the day. All in all a great trail!

Trail Surface Needs Maintenance

April, 2016 by adsaxs

Since we were staying at the KS State Fairgrounds RV Park, we cycled to the start of the trail at Rice Park off of 23rd Avenue. We cycled to and around Carey park. We took the surface roads back to the fairgrounds.

While the trail is a very nice ride along the river and through some of Hutchinson’s city parks, the trail surface needs maintenance. In some sections there were large cracks in the pavement. Other sections had tree roots uprooting the path. It was a kthunk-kthunk-kthunk ride on our hybrids. Luckily, these large cracks were marked with paint and were visible but the ride could have been more comfortable. There weren’t any benches to sit along the path until we reached a park like Rice or Carey.

Overall, we enjoyed the ride. Carey Park was quite an impressive park and a nice place to stop and have lunch. So, if you are visiting the city, as we were, I would recommend a ride along this trail.

Prairie Sunset Trail

Awesome Trail

March, 2016 by rstacey5558

I've ridden the Prairie Sunset Trail several times starting from Maize Rd on the east end and as far as Garden Plaine in the west. Parking a little scares in Wichita at the east end but plenty at the city park in Goddard. If there were a bridge over the Cowskin Creek then users could park at the Air Capital Memorial Park.

Wildfile is plentiful with deer, fox, snake and various bird sightings.

Hike/Bike to a Burger Stand Drive In

February, 2016 by kadenandkenyonsmom

We parked in the Linear Park of Downtown Goddard, KS & rode East to Garden Plain - We stopped at Frosty Treat Drive In Diner for great classic Burgers & Shakes!
203 W Harry Street
Then rode back with happy bellies!
We liked the covered bridge & lots of wildlife - Deer, Turkeys, Lizards...
Easy path. Take plenty of drinking water for a warm day. Wear sunscreen & hat - it was a railroad track once upon a time, so not much shade.

a pleasant ride through the trees.

December, 2015 by dankalal

The length from Garden Plain to 167th street can be ridden by a mountain unicycle without much trouble. There are some areas where the underlying ballast has been exposed, but it's not bad and can be avoided by threading through the gaps.

Parking isn't nearly the issue that the description suggests: In Goddard, there's plenty of close parking on both sides of town (near the trail entrance), and in Garden Plain you'll find lots of room to park just across the street of the trail end. And most all the street crossings will have enough room for a car or two to safely park off the street.

The description also says "arrow straight." There is, in fact, a dog-leg in the trail just east of Goddard. It might not be much, but in Kansas, we'll take it.
