I tried three different locations to park and get on this trail. The very end as mentioned on this ABP gas station which shows an access trail which is very overgrown and the James Ross wildlife rehab which this app states there’s parking. None of which worked I do not recommend attempting to access this trail from York, South Carolina Carolina.
While I do not have firsthand knowledge of this trail, I learned from conversations with local residents that, except for portions of the trail in York, SC, much of the corridor is currently overgrown and undeveloped. A review of Google Maps satellite imagery appears to support those observations.
That is unfortunate, as the region would greatly benefit from a longer rail trail connecting communities and providing additional recreational opportunities. Hopefully, future development efforts will bring more of this historic rail corridor back into public use.
We hit the trail about 9 am for an out and back ride. Pretty quiet early on a Monday morning. Gentle slopes but no big climbs. My wife had a good time on her pedal assist e-bike. A few road crossings but only one busy at the Easley end of the trail. We rode from Pickens to Easley and back. Plenty of parking on the Pickens end. I was able to park my class C camper pretty easily.
It was a beautiful ride through the woods with lots of really interesting history. But there were lots of bumps due to tree roots which were hard to see due to the leaves covering them! We felt it was a bit too rough with our new e-bikes but that is simply a personal preference. We loved the posts along the way with interesting facts about how the RR was built. The Badwell Cemetery along the route was also so very interesting. We would recommend this trail if you don't mind the bumps!
There were a few spots if you wanted to have a seat otherwise just somewhere paved to get some steps in. There’s supposed to be some additions coming.

My wife and I found this to be a great trail to ride. Nice 17miles and beautiful.
The flat and scenic trail has all the makings of a beautiful escape - river crossings, swamp bridges, railroad crossings and bridges and small town charm. Started in peak and at about mile 7.5 there was a large impassable tree across trail prohibiting full biking to prosperity. The trail is not "crushed stone" (would be great if it was) rather it is more like fist size rocks making it a pretty bumpy and painful ride in the saddle.
