Iowa Great Lakes Trail

Great Lakes Trail

October, 2023 by amy331

This is a wonderful bike trail that goes all the way around West Okoboji to the north taking the old railway—beautiful Iowa prairie with wild flowers, all the way to Spirit Lake. Then it goes south to East Okoboji, Hwy 71 with a nicely paved trail. Not always marked well but once you know the way, it’s a piece of cake. 26 miles around West and East Okoboji. We love it!

Three Rivers Trail

Nice trail

September, 2023 by shap

We started out in Humboldt on Hwy 3 and rode east to Thor. This is a well maintained crushed stone trail. There were no wash outs or wash boarding.
Many areas have tree canopy over the trail. A very easy and pleasant ride.

Iowa Great Lakes Trail

Nice ride but poorly marked!!

June, 2023 by allyn.dana

Thank goodness for the TrailLink app bc this trail is very poorly marked. Pay attention to white spray painted arrows to guide you bc there is very little signage. The majority of the trail is asphalt or blacktop and sections are along the major US 71 highway. We parked at the Milford end of trail trailhead and there is no parking. We pulled into the grass along the road. Overall very shaded and nice and would recommend but have you TrailLink app ready to guide you!

Trolley Trail (Clear Lake/Mason City)

don’t travel to ride this “trail”

October, 2022 by pdchawk

Basically this is just a sidewalk next to a busy highway that connects mason city to clear lake. There isn’t much shade or much for scenery.

Blazing Star State Trail

great trail

What a great trail. We loved it. Ride it in July 2022. Temps were great and lake and trees make this trail amazing. It’s a must if your in the area. We from Texas and was in town for work and couldn’t miss the opportunity to ride this trail.

Trolley Trail (Clear Lake/Mason City)

overall a nice path to bike or walk.

June, 2022 by angie.s.h

We start this trail in Clear Lake and walk toward Mason City. The things I like about this trail are that is paved, is separate and away from the road so you are not right next to traffic, there is a bench partway down, and it is longer than a lot of the other local trails. The things I don’t like about the trail is that it is noisy because it’s along the side of a highway, it’s mostly open with minimal shade, and it’s not as scenic as some other trails. It’s great to connect Clear Lake to Mason and has been helpful for us to increase our walking distance.

Trail is really great but could definitely use some more gravel in certain areas where the path is shaded and it doesn't get as much sun the sand can suck all the energy out of you. Of course that could just be in the Winter months.

Beautiful Trail Needs Attention

August, 2021 by shelliott50

This trail wonders through tree tunnels, bridges over train tracks, grassy fields full of wildflowers and spotted several groups of deer. Many places along the route however have bad cracks and yes I worried about my spokes as did the 2014 reviewer. Was surprised to see the 2017 review said it was newly paved. Beautiful ride just watch the road.

Red Jacket Trail

Mankato to Rapidan

July, 2021 by adsaxs

We cycled from the Land of Memories Campground to the Mankato Family YMCA and started there. The first part of the trail passes through residential areas with a number of street crossings. The trail was rather narrow compared to other bike trails we have ridden. There are no mileage markers along the way.

The trail is shaded for most of the way and ends abruptly at Huffy Lane. There is no indication or sign that we had reached the end of the trail so we continued on the road for a couple of blocks to the small village of Rapidan. Not much there. The route towards Rapidan was a slight uphill grade so made for an easy ride back to Mankato. The trail is paved but could use a bit of maintenance in some sections. The trail was OK but nothing to rave about.

Three Rivers Trail

still a well-kept secret!

We only walked a bit of the trail, but saw no one on it the whole 30-45 min we were on it.

Awesome biking trail! Very smooth packed gravel trail. Restrooms and air stations available in some areas. Plan full day and bring water/energy bars.
