This is such a beautiful trail. Look out for the "tour de france" trainers. There is no yielding to pedestrians, those pushing strollers, walking toddlers. This is a strictly fast bicycle trail. It has been so for a few years. I recommend separate hours for bicycles and for pedestrians before there is an accident.
Rode on an unseasonably cool and overcast July day. Trail is in excellent condition. We rode our street bikes. This section is doable for the casual rider and for families. Take water, there are no services. Beautiful ride through the flint hills. Bushong is the high point in this section.
Good trail for walking with or without your dog, running, biking and family friendly. There’s also another trail across the street that runs all the way to Barry Road.Great place ,just wish people are more conscientious at picking up after their dogs.
We rode the entire trail today (7/07/18) from Pleasant Hill to Windsor and we couldn't have been more impressed. Not only has the Department of Conservation done a great job of improving the trail condition of the East end of the trail the 2 new depots at Chilhowee & Leeton are very nice. Also the addition of a place to sit out of the sun at the Medford trailhead is awesome! This trail Gas a great mixture of crop land and woods, it's quite rural and we saw several deer early in the morning.
Just rode the whole trail at the end of June 2018. The trail surface was in terrific condition. Smooth as a baby’s bottom. It seems to be lightly travelled unfortunately. Bring plenty of water. Services in town are somewhat spotty- there’s only one little convenience store in Chilhowie for example. Wear sunscreen too- I’d say it’s only 2/3 shaded.
1st time user. Started at Argosy, and went north to the 1st park, then there were no signs or sidewalk marks when the trail gets to the street saying where to pick it up again. I got lost and wasted 30 minutes looking for the trail continuation. This happens every time the trail dumps you at a street. I even had someone at the upper end of the trail ask how to get to the river, and they had the same concern about lack of signage or markings. On the good side, this is a beautiful, well maintained trail - and I very much enjoyed the ride.
This trail has deteriorated more since my last review, for 3 years I’ve been promised that the trail will be graded and overplayed with the next budget, for 2 years this hasn’t happened, so I’m pretty sure nothing will happen again this year. At this point this trail is very unsafe due to the neglect of city of independence, while building new trails they have done little or no maintenance on a major portion of this trail. Rock Creek Trail has become an embarrassment to Independence
Spent way too long to give this trail a go. Good access from i35. Really a safe looking area at least during the day. Since go there I have gone there weekly to either Skate or jog. I haven't made it up the stairs and over the bridge as of yet though. Only Complaint, they need to add on! Take it past Isle of Capri on the other side of i35, looks easy to do.
I have Rollerbladed this trail multiple times. They seem to be adding more to it too. Long length good pavement. Several small hills but nothing bad. Always a fun one to go on. Even has a waterfall in the middle and 2 houses are located like actually on the trail which is very weird. But makes the trail more interesting. Even has a cool tunnel.
Great ride on a super nice spring day. The trails were in very good condition. The only problem that we encountered was the 2 mile (2.5 mile?) detour that is west of Ottawa. It is on gravel roads, which is no problem for gravel riders. There are also a lot of dogs, most are of no consequence... but be on the lookout for an Ill-tempered pit bull on the west end of the detour. The owner was there and able to contain him so we could pass. This is the only reason I couldn’t give our experience 5 stars. Next
Love it but wish it was a dirt trail like before and could be extended as it’s short. Just the same, once can always go to the Wetlands from there.
Paved, clean, fairly shady and easy to ride. Only problem is that one has to stop at every block due to traffic going west to East or visa-versa. Also, it’s way too short and wish the City of Lawrence would invest some of their money on extending the trail to go West to Clinton Lake. We need more dedicated trails for bikes in Lawrence without traffic.
