Rode the entire trail over two days April 2026. Exceptionally well maintained trail and beautiful scenery throughout. Trail was well packed and very easy to ride. Kudos to the staff who maintain the trail.
Hands down our favorite trail. We’ve hiked the entire trail (not all at once) and biked it end to end, and no section ever disappoints—no matter the season.
An added bonus is the park’s occasional van tours. Options include routes from Cliffview to Foster Falls and from Foster Falls to Pulaski. These guided tours offer wonderful insight into the area’s history and the former rail line.
Be sure to check the park’s website for tour details.
Great ride! Challenge was avoiding the walnuts that fall this time of year! We saw several deer. 2 bounced down the trail right in front of us! The weather was beautiful and the trail was fabulous!
This is a very nice trail- the part you can ride as of 9-25-25. The bridge at the 3.5 mile mark is locked off so that is all we could ride from Glade Springs That was quite disappointing. The trail is almost all grass- it was nicely mowed. It had rained for two days prior to our riding so was a little muddy in places but did not detract from the ride. Highly recommend this trail!
For my birthday today we biked from Galax to Fries. It was my first real trailhead ride and I loved it. Beautiful scenery to enjoy while on the trail. So many real breath taking views to enjoy during your ride.
Did this trail on the first cool late August Sunday afternoon and enjoyed it immensely. Small town flavor with woods, some houses, fields, and some businesses. It wasn’t well marked and we only saw one real sign that designated it as this trail. We parked at the church after asking an employee there if it was OK. He said no problem. As another reviewer said it’s great for a Sunday afternoon pedal.
Just spoke with the Ranger today, August 24, 2025 at the Canyon Rim visitor center and he said the trail was closed. It has been closed for a while because of the bridges are not safe anymore. So cross this one off your list.
Rode 10 miles northbound from the Christiansburg Rec Center, keeping west of Blacksburg. While there are some flattish sections. there are some rolling hills (2-4%) and more (4-6%). Further north it gets steeper, 7-9%, and even 12% at one point.
Lots of benches, partly shaded, a couple of restroom stops. Trail is sometimes narrower than standard.
Great signageWell maintained trails Stay at the Inn at Foster Falls for the full experience
Just have to give all the park rangers and volunteers a shout out for making this trail a beautiful trail again after Hurricane Helene. We parked at Ivanhoe and rode to Cliffview. Flush toilets and a gift shop at Cliffview. The trail is better than I remember it being before. You could clearly see the devastation and how hard they must have worked to bring this trail back! Thank you!
I took my gravel bike on this trail and won’t do it again. There’s large stones and branches. I had to carry my bike over several downed trees and several big wash outs. A beautiful ride next to the creek for sure. A great place to hike I’d say. Please don’t think of this as a rail to trail flat ride, it is not.
