Elk River Trail (WV)

Beautiful but needs some work

June, 2025 by ken.criss

We rode parts of this trail the week of June 22, 2025. The trail is remote (not much cell service) which we like. My wife suffered a blowout not far from the bigfoot. That shortened our ride that day. The trail surface is decent for the most part but there are sections where there are pretty large rocks/stones that you have to watch out for. My wife's blowout was due to one of these. No big hills which is nice. The 2nd day we rode from Gassaway to Strange Creek. Saw no other humans either day however it was pretty hot both days we rode. The big takeaway for us was the trailheads need a lot of work. For the most part, they were just parking lots. No water, no covered shelter or picnic table and no restroom at the trailhead. (restrooms were scattered over the trail, however). Shoutout to Trailhead Farm Meats & More and Bigfoot Braxxies in Gassaway for helping us with the flat tire and yummy pepperoni rolls.

Really enjoyed this trail. We were thankful for all the shade since it was in the 90's. We stayed at the Lodge of Hocking College which was on the trail in Nelsonville. Highly recommend.

Moonville Rail Trail

Good Trail, but should be better when it’s fully finished

June, 2025 by bc.ship

Rode from Hope Schoolhouse to past King Hollow Tunnel. The section between Hope School and the first road crossing is mostly grass, but wasn’t a problem on fat tire e-bike. At the crossing you have to take the road to Moonville since bridges aren’t in yet, but once you reach Moonville it’s an easy ride. The road wasn’t bad either I didn’t pass any cars and only a few hills, but I’d give it 5 stars if it was finished. Also a visitors center at the schoolhouse that’s open on weekends.

My daughter n I parked at Ivydale and headed north on the trail, 3 miles up this BEAUTIFUL trail there's pick-nic table under the watchful eye of a gi-normous wooden carved Bigfoot! Five star attraction!

My favorite Ohio trail

October, 2024 by 8x46pfyzzf

Very clean and safe with new smooth surface. Well maintained. A lot to see and spot along the way. Beautiful scenery. We traveled the entire trail in one day even with little endurance riding under our saddle. Elevation climbs were gentle and mostly unnoticeable. Highly recommend this trail for families. I can’t wait to come back and do this one again. Highly recommend Eclipse Company Store for meals as the half way point.

Moonville Rail Trail

Fun trail for the adventure seekers

October, 2024 by 8x46pfyzzf

Our hybrid bike tires did great on this trail from Mineral to Hope Moonville Road. The trail is packed gravel and a very comfortable ride. The Moonville Tunnel was a smooth ride but Kings Hollow Tunnel was rough. Be advised to ride through Kings Hollow slowly as it is riddled with potholes. Make sure to bring lights for the tunnels. Overall a wonderful trail and I highly recommend.

Mid-September 2024 Ride

September, 2024 by jjmisner

We drove from Alabama with the intention of riding 25+ miles in several states. This trail did not disappoint. We began our e-bike ride from the Ohio University Bobcats football stadium traveling 17 miles to Nelsonville’s Rocky Outdoor Gear. Beautiful scenery, safe trail (only one road crossing where you felt the need to be extra cautious), nice folks along the way. On the return trip we enjoyed a tasty meal at the Eclipse. Definitely worth the trip.

North Bend Rail Trail

West Union area- westbound

September, 2024 by wrdavis57

West Union area is paved both directions for a few miles, if heading west towards Pennsboro/Ellenboro trail is both hard pack. The tunnel just outside of West Union was pretty dry (2200+) and should have a light to be safe. Trail is mostly under canopy with some rock cliffs, creek view and wildlife can be seen. Fat tire makes it a comfortable, enjoyable ride

Nice trail but use too big stones for typical bikes

August, 2024 by kstone1776

Rode eastern 17 miles east then west (Smithurg to Wolf Summit). Generally well maintained. Only two washouts at driveways. Minimal pot holes, etc. The eastern most tunnel is severely washed out from water running back through the tunnel but passable. Our tandem bike has 2.5 inch tires and at 10 to 15 mph, our typical speed, it was like riding a vibrating machine. Did not feel out of control from too deep of stone or tires slipping side ways off big stones if I watched vigilantly and chose trail tracks carefully. But having to be so watchful of the trail detracted from the ride. Decided to skip the rest of the trail for now. They really need to find stone for the trail that is more appropriate for biking.

Bike trail and bridge In need of repair

August, 2024 by haft

First bridge on trail from parking lot by Thomas do it center. Bridge is rotting on the edge on both sides of bridge. Its dangerous because weeds are growing hiding some of the rotten areas of bridge. Also the trail from thomas do it center to 4th avenue needs to repaved or repaired. I ride my bike on trail and it is a very bumpy ride. If I am riding from spring valley to town I usually ride 160 to town and bike trail back to spring valley. One trip riding on the trail is enough for me.
