What do you do when you have a disused railroad, and a nearly impassible highway? Rail-trail advocates in Rancho Cordova recognized the potential to solve these challenges as well create new opportunities for recreation and commuting in one fell swoop. The Mather Heritage Trail, opened in Fall of 2018, is 1.4 miles of rail-trail lined with plentiful trees and lush landscaping. It travels through local neighborhoods, and over US-50 (Lincoln Highway), once an imposing obstacle to walking and biking. The paved pathway also connects to buses and transit – its northern terminus is the Mather Field/ Mills Field Light Rail Station. It ends at the perimeter of Mather Airport.
