Military Ridge State Trail

Beautiful ride

Rode from Mt. Horeb to Ridgeway and back. Beautiful countryside and the trail is great. All well kept. Can’t wait to go back!

Cheese Country Recreation Trail

Beautiful countryside

I rode just part this trail today on my electric fat tired bike (Monroe to South Wayne and back). Most of the trail is gravel/crushed limestone. I’m afraid if I didn’t have the fat tires it could have very difficult. It was a little rough also. Overall it was a beautiful ride, I just had to be very careful. It was a weekday and I didn’t see anyone else.

Pine River Trail

Nice Trail!

This trail is super nice I think. Has some pretty views the whole way too. Liked it so much I did it twice in October! Came back a 2nd time to see the colors in the rolling hills. I think Fall is the best time to bike this one.

Pine River Trail

Had an awesome day on the trail!

My husband and rode from Lone Rock to Richland Center and back. The colors on the trees were beautiful! The trail was in good shape. It ranges from crushed limestone to paved. There is a small section that is a tiny bit rough, but we have fat tire bikes so it was no problem. It’s all pretty flat. We saw marshes, creeks, farmland, and wooded areas. There are several wooden bridges, all in great shape.

Root River State Trail

Great family trail

This trail is awesome! We only went about 16 miles from Houston and then back, but it was very enjoyable. We plan to come back and do another section of trail with our kids.

Root River State Trail

Can I give a SIX star??

Best and most favorite trail of the trails we rode in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin on this trip!! Rode 50 miles round-trip, Petersen to fountain. Trail is smooth asphalt. Gorgeous river views along the way. Last 5 miles are uphill to fountain, but a very fun dissent on the return! Second day, Peterson to Houston 36 miles r/t. First 5 miles to Rushford, smooth trail. The remaining 13 miles to Houston, trail has some sinkhole spots and the bridge transitions are rough. Still some river views. Each of the little towns along the trail has a couple restaurants, just call ahead to make sure they’re open during the week.

La Crosse River State Trail

Flat and straight

Just an average trail ride. Nothing special. Camped at veterans park. Campground in West Salem. Road the section from West Salem to Sparta. Trail service is good, packed chat. Very straight and boring. Decided not to ride the section from West Salem to La Crosse.

Elroy-Sparta State Trail

Tunnels make the trail 5 star

October, 2023 by mrmikesch

Rode this trail over two days. Camped at Tunnel Trail Campground just east of Wilton. Rode Wilton to Sparta. Two tunnels in the section. Very cool!! The trail surface was mostly OK, except where the trail maintenance tractor had driven on it when the trail was soft and left ruts from the tractor tires. The section from Wilton to a Elroy has one tunnel. Small descent after the tunnel and then flattens out on the way to Elroy. Least favorite part of this ride.

Military Ridge State Trail

Military ridge trail 9/8/23

The weather went from to hot to to cold. 68 degrees, cloudy, threatening rain. I rode a MB from Ridgeway to a little east of Blue Mounds around 10 miles then 10 miles back to Ridgeway. Would have gone further but the weather was questionable. The trail is a little up and down and found loose sand and gravel on the grades. Otherwise the trail was in great condition, downed trees were all cut back and moved off the trail. Lots of trail bridges in the Blue Mounds area. All of the towns had places for food and drinks. Barneveld had toilets and picnic tables for resting. I did find a picnic table 3 miles West of Barneveld, so I stopped and warmed up some soup.
I would like to return but start my ride at Verona and ride to Mt Horeb or Blue Mounds.
Wisconsin has fantastic trails and don't mind paying the $5 trail pass. I'm from Illinois

We started out across the street from Riley Tavern and went all the way to Blue Mounds. Beautiful trail, well groomed and loved going through Mt Horeb. When we finished we were able to go to the Tavern for refreshments. Beautiful day!!

Root River State Trail

Nice Trail, but

The trail is a super ride, lots of nice scenery and a very fast track. However was sorely disappointed that the pie shop in Whalan is only open weekends after labor day. That was to be the highlight of the ride!

Root River State Trail

Nicwst trail in all of Minnesota!

September, 2023 by jkboucher

I spent the month of August riding rail trails around the state, and this was the most scenic and best maintained trail I encountered. Lanesboro is a great little town to stop for lunch or ice cream, and would be a good choice for your riding "headquarters". Camping available at Lanesboro and other points along the trail.
