Nicolet State Trail

Not for biking

July, 2017 by kate.s.peyton

This trail is not for biking. At all. Full stop. We picked it as it was listed in a state-issued brochure on bike paths in Wisconsin. This is a shared used trail and, as such, it has basically become ATV only. Loose gravel for most of the trail - absolutely grueling. The trail was so torn up - and the ATVs so numerous and inconsiderate - in Gillett that we got on the trail in Wabeno and made it to Tippler but the trip was grueling. We turned around and came back on state HWYs (139, 8, 32) and even with the intense hills, we made it back in a third of the time. If you bike on this trail, it will be an unpleasant slog.

This may be a fun trail for ATVing, but it isn't that wide so you can't go that fast and it's very hot and dusty.

Do not go in the trail!

July, 2017 by uniquelyyourseo

We jumped on the trail just outside Shawano heading to Pulaski. Tall grass, holes, mud, and no toilets are what you will have. Once you get into brown county the trails are beautiful. I highly recommend you do not use this trail in Shawano county. West of Shawano the trail is on the road so you are dealing with traffic and no trees.

Sheboygan Trailhead to the Twisted Restaurant in Sheboygan Falls

May, 2017 by rtg79

This is about a 10 mile round trip, most on the Old Plank Road Trail, and a short leg south on Meadowlark Rd. to get to the Twisted Restaurant in Sheboygan Falls. The trails has some hills, but our 7 year-old on a one-speed cruiser type bike handled it great. We usually aim for a restaurant/pub as the turnaround point...which gives our family of 5 something to shoot for! Twisted is right on the Sheboygan River and has great food, views, and brews.

The Old Plank Road trail parallels Rte 23, so it's not always peaceful, but it's a great way to get between the towns of Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls, Kohler, Plymouth, etc. Very enjoyable to travel past the farms and fields, and there's plenty of good side roads to get into each town. The trail is nicely paved, and we usually see lots of fast riding bicyclists, so it must be good for a workout!

Nice Trail

May, 2017 by jeff.ritter

I have just completed the entire trail in 4 round-trip segments - Casco to Algoma, Luxemburg to Kewaunee, Forestville to Algoma, and Sturgeon Bay to Forestville. This is a good trail that requires a hybrid or mountain bike - generally dry with a few wet areas (no puddles), and rough in some spots due to horses. Good rural and forest scenery. Saw lots of deer and sandhill cranes.

From Manawa to Scandinavia

May, 2017 by glh_tl

After a bit of frustration trying to find a trailhead or parking spot in Manawa, I finally asked a man who was outside working on his lawn where to park. He kindly offered information and said parking along the roadside near the trail was fine. Apparently the bridge that connects to downtown Manawa, where parking is more available, is not yet complete. I parked along Wolf Road and picked up the trail at that point. (If you need to stop at a restroom before you hit the trail, there is a gas station in town.)

The ride was pleasant and the trail was in fine condition. There was quite a bit of diversity as it passed through wooded areas, farmland, and marsh areas. The grade is relatively flat with only a few mild hills along the way.

Plenty of birdlife activity kept the sights lively. Be sure to keep you eyes open along the water areas if you want to catch a glimps of turtles sunning on a log or peeking their heads out of the stream.

At Ogdensburg Pond, there is a small dam with a trail bridge that is a nice place to stop and enjoy the scenery before heading on to Scandinavia.

In Scandinavia, I'd suggest getting off the trail and riding the small town roads just north a bit to Silver Lake. Jorgenson Park is on the north side of the lake and well worth the stop. There's a shelter, planked walking trails, and a lovely little bench on a dock where you can take a peaceful rest before hitting the trail again. Also, if you ride around town a bit before heading back to Manawa, you are able to clock a nice 30 miles under your belt.

November beauty

November, 2016 by greeny

We started in Scandinavia and headed East to Ogdensburg.
Returned to Scandinavia for a picnic by the river before
venturing West for a few miles, then back to the initial spot. Trail was in perfect condition and the scenery
beautiful. November 5th and the temperature was 69 degrees F. We will return, for sure, to explore the remainder of this most inviting trail.

Wiouwash State Trail

beautiful ride

October, 2016 by lisa202000

We rode from Medina to Hortonville and back on this trail at the end of October. (4 miles each way) This was an absolutely beautiful trip with trees draping over the trail most of the way. It also included some beautiful marsh land and some bird filled meadows. There was a port -potty, some sitting areas and a picnic table for lunching in this short stint of the trail. I can't wait to ride this trail again in the summer time.

Peebles Trail

Nice Trail

September, 2016 by deverson_tl

We rode the Peebles Trail, Prairie Trail, and The Loop around Fond Du Lac on September 19. Our route was 22 miles. The Loop is a marked route around the city that takes you on city streets. There are a few busy crossings, but much of the route takes you on lesser traveled streets. There are marked bike lanes on some of the streets. They have it marked pretty well with signs and painted arrows and the word Loop on the pavement. The paint is getting faded and needs to be repainted, but you can still make the arrows out. Almost all is pavement, but there is a portion that is hard packed limestone which is in good condition. This is a ride that we would make again if we were in the area.

Devil's River State Trail

Very nice, but is a long for ride for kids (under 10) so bring snacks/plenty of water.

September, 2016 by trueramsfan

Started in Denmark, very nice parking and restroom facilities. Drinking fountain available. The trail is well kept, crushed stone and is shady in the afternoon or early morning. Midday would be very sunny. The trail is long for a group of children. Nice park about 12.5 miles south on trail. All intersections with roads are well marked.

Peaceful Farm, Field and Forest Trail

July, 2016 by jane.dumke

After reading the last couple reviews we were a little bit leery about this Trail but we found it to be pleasant, deserted, through beautiful fields and trees. We rode from Amherst Junction just past Scandinavia. The first 1.5 miles was on county highways, but was well marked, and not a lot of traffic on Sunday afternoon. If you like the beautiful farm fields around central Wisconsin framed by rolling hills of green forest, this is a great trail. Never saw another biker, and the tracks indicated there had been only one other set of bikers all day. We found it well maintained. It was after a wet night so the trail was soft, which made it seem somewhat up hill both ways! We worked coming back from Scandinavia! Glad the sun wasn't out most of the day as there is little shade, and no place outside of businesses in Scandinavia itself to get more water. We did enjoy cooling our feet in the River, though!
