Military Ridge State Trail

Blue Mound to Dodgeville

July, 2021 by drprovanch

We camped at Blue Mound State Park and biked the first day to Dodgeville. The camp is at mile marker 22, so 36 miles round trip. Great scenery as the elevation is high: distant farmlands, golf courses, forest,…. The trail is in great condition, winding and rolling throughout farmlands, wooded area, prairies, and small rural communities. Our return trip was in misting rain and the forecast for storms later that week canceled our plans for the eastern leg until another time.

Brodhead to Albany July 2021

First time on the trail. I had a mountain bike, which was appropriate. Trail was mostly two 8-10 inch bare patches with grasses/weeds between. Otherwise, it was fine. Covered bridge was a surprise.

Nice Riding Trail

July, 2021 by dpoquette

I found this trail to be a great ride! The utility company has fixed the culvert and the trail is in great working order. As indicated in the trail description, this is a crushed stone, dirt trail. Starting at the east end, the trail starts out as packing gravel and about half way it changes to crushed asphalt gravel. It's very ridable with wider (35mm or wider) tires. I'd probably ride it with road tires, but you would be bouncing around and possibly lose traction.

The trail does continue on the west side of Hwy 164 to the Fox River, but it turns into dirt (logging road like AKA double track). The trail was full of chickaree and was in full bloom and hits your legs and wheels.

Fox River Trail (IL)

needs repair and upkeep

June, 2021 by ielpmike

This is a really nice trail with lots of places to stop along the way and some great scenery at times but the southern end of the trail in particular is in pretty rough shape. I had a puncture flat along the way in a not so great area. I was approached by a pedestrian who asked me for spare change rather than asking me if I needed help with my tire. I recommend riding with a buddy along the south end. Otherwise a great trail

How to Get across the Burlington Gap in the White River State Trail

June, 2021 by buehler868

The small city of Burlington straddles the two sections of the White River State Trail. I did not find any signage directing how to easily get from an east trail head in Burlington to the west trail head. The gap is because of the old railroad tracks still being used and an active aggregate quarry. On my westbound trip, I took what used to be the state highways coming into town, which are all now city arterials, as Wisconsin has built a city bypass.

On my return trip, I looked at the aerials on my phone and found an unmarked city limestone path that borders the north side of the quarry which covers about half of the gap. From there subdivision streets can be used to get to Calumet St which is the overpass over the CN RR. From the top of the bridge one can use the access ramp to head down to easily reach the eastern section of the White River State Trail

My work commute

June, 2021 by jasonschwarzee

I take this trail to and from work along the river during warm months from St Charles to Bartlett (via Sterns) all the time. Can’t complain about the bidirectional trip. River looks like a sheet of glass most mornings. Only 2 real intersections to worry about. The rest is calm with a couple small climbs.

Long Prairie Trail

Needs repairs

June, 2021 by dan_o_00

Rode the section from the Roland Olson Forest Preserve to just short of Poplar Grove. The first section between the preserve and Caledonia wasn't too bad but still some bumpy spots. After Caledonia it got progressively worse and prior to Poplar Grove I gave up and turned around. If you are looking to go around 15mph or faster you might need a full suspension bike because it is in terrible shape. Asphalt needs to be repaved.
