Fox River Trail (IL)

Trail from St. Charles to Aurora 5*, St. Charles to Elgin 3*

September, 2017 by dabertin

We rode the section from Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles to Aurora on Saturday September 16th in the afternoon. Once we found the trail from the parking lot, it was a lovely ride and not a lot of hills. It passes through a few congested areas near parks and through downtown St. Charles but largely it was not overpopulated. There are a few places that it wasn't terribly clear which way to go, there's a main trail with trails that go off it and at one point there are two trails, one on each side of the river. Once we got to Aurora there was a bit of street riding, well marked, and then there was nothing although I knew we couldn't be at the end based on the map. The trail is all asphalt and in pretty good condition. The scenery is beautiful and goes through some nice towns.

Sunday Sept. 17th we rode the part from Norris Woods in St. Charles to the 5 or 6 mile mark which is north of Elgin. There were lots of places that were not marked well at all, there were a lot of confused riders including us. There's currently one section that is closed, we figured it out going north, going south we missed the turnoff but were able to figure out how to get back on the street. The scenery was not as nice as the south section. There are more hills on this route including one right at Norris Woods, one in Elgin that I had to get off and walk and one mid way that was very challenging. Mostly asphalt, some street riding, a couple small crushed limestone sections.

Pecatonica Prairie Trail

Went East from Winnebago.

September, 2017 by jorourke61088

Three miles from Westfield road in Winnebago to meridian road where it ends. They are doing construction on a sewer main so I am not sure you can go on it during the week past Weldon road. It looks like they've widened it to move heavy equipment through. There are a couple of rough spots but nothing you can't get through. Fields on both sides and flat.

Fox River Trail (Waukesha)

Nice moderate bike ride

September, 2017 by mail4denisk

I started my trek south on the trail from the EB Shurts Center, where there are restrooms, changing rooms and plenty of parking. The trail goes along Sentry Drive for a while, through an industrial park area then veers into a more natural setting of fields and wooded areas, all the while following the Fox River. It keeps getting better as you go south, as there are boardwalks and observation decks in the Fox River Sanctuary. After crossing Sunset Drive, you follow the the Fox River Parkway through a very pleasant riverside park. It returns to a blacktop trail that is especially scenic in the Fox River Park. There are several places to stop and admire the Fox River. The trail loops around in the park and returns north. While the trail actually starts north of the Shurt Center at Frame Park, I didn't feel like riding along busy College Avenue to rejoin the trail that leads to Frame Park. My afternoon ride was a very pleasant 10 miles.

Harlem Township Bike Path

Great place to walk!

September, 2017 by expressionsbylindsey

I come to the Harlem Township Path almost everyday. I walk with my dog. Always very well maintained. The 1.6 miles is great and my son loves to run around the track as well. The playground and other sports options in the park are awesome as well! Wonderful park all around :)

Fox River Trail (IL)

ok, but prefer other trails

September, 2017 by malysaamy

Have ridden several times: north from Elgin past Carpentersville and then Aurora North to Red Gate Bridge. It's too suburban and crowded for my taste. Trail too narrow to share with walkers, baby strollers and bikes. I prefer Plank Trail, Cal Sag Trail, Centennial, which you can take all the way east to Columbia Woods, the I and M, though limestone, has more of an adventure feel to it, which is what I'm looking for in a ride, and the Waubonsee Glacial trail which is farm country to Kankakee and also allows you to explore Midewin Tall Grass Prairie. These are wider trails, with more varied scenery and less suburban atmosphere overall, except for portions of Plank around Frankfort and some to the west. It's a nice trail, but there are better ones out there.

Southwest Commuter Path

Good for a shorter Rollerski

September, 2017 by katron

I am new to the Madison area and am looking for good paved asphalt (not concrete) trails to rollerski. I tried this one out today and found it good for the views and the varied terrain (no hills however). For rollerskiing it is not fantastic, as there are many crossings that can be awkward and many concrete sections that do not give poles with carbide tips any purchase.
I can see this being a very nice road cycling trail however, as the views are great and the trail passes by a few good looking food shops.
I held back a star only because it didn't suit my needs as a roller-skier.

Grant Woods Bike Path

Grant Woods

Started at Rollins Rd and headed North. It is a nice trail that has some hills that can be challenging for novice riders like me lol. Look out for snakes on the trail, but it is some good scenery and a nice mix of sun and shade.

White River State Trail

Vandenboom Rd to Cunningham Rd

September, 2017 by sparkman430

I walked this trail after a rain storm and most of the trail was dry except for a small are near the beginning. The trail was straight and not much change in grade level which made it easy to walk. The vegetation was cut back nice. My only complaint is that there is no bathroom facilities in the parking lot or along the trail. I wish they would continue the trail to Union Grove and on to Sturtevant. I enjoy walking and would love to use a trail closer to home.

Lake Country Recreation Trail

Wow!

August, 2017 by 3deepbreaths

This trail is hilly! If you have a road bike, it's challenging. I have a hybrid and it was fun, but very challenging. Windy, slow climbs and some pretty good sized hills. We loved the scenery, and the work out.

Seven Waters Bike Trail

Variety is the Spice

August, 2017 by sandyt629

This was the first time my hubby and I used this Trail. We went out and back 25 miles total, starting from the southern end near Riverside Park in Burlington. As a couple people mentioned, the crushed gravel up front was rutted and loose in some areas, not the easiest to pedal through. That said, the weather was beautiful, and the next ten miles of the trail was good; varied and interesting scenery, with sloping hills and shady woods. Nice ride!

Lake Geneva Bike Path

Lake Geneva Bike Trail

Unfortunately, our bike ride was a big disappointment. This trail is not maintained at all--weeds growing over most of the paved areas. This is most definitely not a trail to take your young children on. It wasn't marked clearly and we struggled with where it actually went and sooner than later, gave up and headed back to the Veterns Park where it was suggested that we start from. There were also too many roads with lots of traffic to cross over with little kids.
