Root River State Trail

Great Trail

May, 2023 by lyonsjustin1958

We are a 63 year old couple. We stayed Geneva Hideway in Peterson. Good, inexpensive place to stay. Rode Peterson to Lanesboro and back. Then we rode Peterson to Houston and back. Very smooth trail with a variety of birds and butterflies. Plenty of shade trees. Second time we have ridden this trail. Plan on doing it again.

Wisconsin Bike Trip Report - Cycle Seven Rails to Trails in Five Days: In August 2022, our group of 11 went on a self-guided partially supported bike ride covering seven Rails to Trails in Central Wisconsin near La Crosse, Sparta and Eau Claire. Turned out to be an amazing trip with great weather, except the last day during which it rained. Great variety of environments and trails, including some short bridges and long tunnels, shaded woodlands and bright prairie. Attached is a pdf detailing the logistics and planning we carried out to make the trip happen. TrailLink.com has great description of each individual trail. Over five days of riding we covered:
1. Elroy-Sparta State Trail
2. Great River State Trail
3. La Crosse River State Trail
4. 400 State Trail
5. Red Cedar State Trail
6. Chippewa River State Trail
7. Old Abe Trail

A nice easy trail linked to quiet streets & parks for a 4 mile loop.

La Crosse River State Trail

Totally Flat

October, 2022 by fqhgrbx7tc

This is a flat ride. You need to pay $5 a day or $25 a year. You need to purchase it at a business in town. We purchased it at a golf course 1 mile from where we started.

Elroy-Sparta State Trail

This trail was great, beautiful farm country to ride through. As well as challenging tunnels. It was an uphill climb from Sparta to tunnel 3, but the return was well worth the effort. Will be back again!

Elroy-Sparta State Trail

Trail To Ourselves (Almost)

October, 2022 by johnrobhill

Rode on a sunny weekday in October. We encountered (maybe) 10 people the entire time. (Except for a school group on foot--in the middle of nowhere). Can anyone say anything negative about this trail?

Seen Better Days!

October, 2022 by johnrobhill

Did this trail as a warm up to the Elroy-Sparta trail the same day.
Trail hasn't been maintained in what would appear to be years! Cracks, grass, ruts. Not awful--but needs a lot of TLC
