Tomahawk Creek Trail

Nice Trail

February, 2020 by donnharrison

We went on a busy Sunday afternoon and found friendly people and plenty of cool dogs to pet. The trial is well maintained and features views of woods, a quiet creek, and slices of urban life. Great place for a walk.

Blue River Parkway Trail

Primary connector piece to a much bigger trail network

February, 2020 by bikenrun1205

KCMO did this trail well, and it is an important foundational piece. As the Blue River Parkway trail expands, this section already connects the Tomahawk and Indian Creek Trails to the west, and will eventually extend downstream toward the Stadiums, which will connect it with the Henry Wiggins Trolley Track Trail on its way, and ultimately the Rock Island Spur of the Katy Trail State Park. To the south, it will further extend along the Blue River into Johnson County, and eventually networks being built there for the Coffee Creek Trail.

Riverfront Heritage Trail

Good Urban Trail

Nice Trail, not always the best marked. Lightly used.

Rock Island Spur of Katy Trail State Park

Very nice Trail

February, 2020 by bikenrun1205

They are doing this trail right! The current Northern end, which goes through Lee's Summit, is brand new, and very well done suburban trail. The main segment, which goes from Pleasant Hill to Windsor, is well done, and well maintained. We have seen the State on this checking for downed trees, washouts, etc. after storms.

Cannot wait for it to be fully linked to KC!

Little Blue Trace Trail

Nice Local Trail

February, 2020 by bikenrun1205

Years ago, this was my local trail. It is fairly well designed, and long enough to provide a good long ride for the family. Look forward to when this is extended to the Rock Island Trail!

Harry Wiggins Trolley Track Trail

Nice Urban Trail

February, 2020 by bikenrun1205

I have ridden this trail multiple times. The Northern end is quite busy, and there are several crossings throughout, so definitely a recreational trail. The further south you take the trail, the more quiet and remote the trail becomes. Trail crosses a few parking lots in Brookside and Waldo.

I have ridden this all the way to the end at 85th and Prospect, and then continued on to the Blue River Parkway. Will love it when this connects to the Blue River trails someday. The last mile of the trail is rough, overgrown and neglected.

Lawrence Levee Trail

Wide open Trail. Great for families!

February, 2020 by bikenrun1205

I have taken the whole family here multiple times. Very few road crossings, and wide open rides. Easy parking near the mountain bike trails. This is basically a levee ride, so flat, and smooth gravel riding.

Turkey Creek Streamway Trail

Nice Short Trail

Well Maintained. Good access to neighboring communities. Nestled among both residential and industrial areas.

Rock Island Spur of Katy Trail State Park

Long Straight Flat Crushed Gravel

September, 2019 by joebus76

Pleasant Hill to 1 hour and back. Nice trail with normal overhead canopy debris here and there. Very smooth concrete bridges. Some short washed out sections repaired with larger loose gravel not yet compacted. Very monotonous compared to some other rail trails , but good for conversation. Averaged 13-17mph. The highlight of the day trip was the Wyoming Street Wine Stop after the ride.

Coffee Creek Streamway Trail

Short, but good Trail

September, 2019 by bikenrun1205

Newly completed in 2018, this trail is in great condition, and services continue to be added (such as bathroom facilities at the Heritage Park trailhead). I look forward to the future completion of this trail past Switzer, along Coffee Creek!

Flint Hills Trail - Osawatomie to Ottawa - EXCELLENT!

August, 2019 by larrysmith2935

Today we rode the Flint Hills Trail from Osawatomie to Ottawa and back. We had a great time and this trail is highly recommended! The trail is a "Rails to Trails" route that follows the Marais des Cygnes river, so it is predominately flat. The gravel surface is packed very light chip, so almost any type of bike will work (we rode gravel bikes). In a few places, the recent heavy rains washed away the light chip top coat and exposed the more coarse RR bed gravel below, but it is not a problem. We did not see any of the thorns etc. mentioned above in posts from previous years. The trail head is a little hard to find, and Google maps did not help. If you find the Osawatomie elementary school and then proceed down that same road about 3/4 mile further, the trail head (with some parking) is on your right. Leaving on the trail from Osawatomie, the first 6 miles are completely shaded by trees arching over the trail. After that the trail is about 1/2 shaded and 1/2 open meadows - so this is a great trail for warm summer days (and should be beautiful in the fall). There are many bridges, views of the river and wide open farmland to see along the way. Today, at 9 miles in, there was about 200 yd where water covered the trail from the big overnight thunderstorms, but this is not normal. There are no drinking water stops along the way - so bring at least 2 good sized bottles per person. There are however farm houses all along, so if you really needed help in an emergency, it is not far away. Ottawa is about 18 miles from Osawatomie and you will know that you are close when you pass under the I-35 bridge (about 2 miles to go). If you want lunch, turn left off the trail at 7th street (it is well marked), go ~1 mile south on 7th and you will hit Main street. Subway is 2 blocks to your left (9th street) on Main, or you can go to downtown and have a variety of food choices. We had a really nice ride today and hope that you can ride this trail soon too!
