We took our bikes over to Marthas Vineyard on the Steamship Authority ferry out of Woods Hole on May 5, 2026. We had parked for free 3.5 miles up the on the Shining Sea Bike path in Falmouth. We landed in Vineyard Haven at 11:30am and made our way from the ferry to the Forest Bike loop. It was 3 miles from Ferry to the path. We walked our bikes for the first half mile to get out of the downtown traffic as the sidewalks were quite narrow. Once we got rolling it took us about half hour to get to the start. Once on the path it was quite easy to follow the loop. We went past the airport and many fields and secluded homes. We brought our own food and water, but there was a convenience store at the airport on the first stretch on Barnes road. It was about 63 degrees out with stiff winds of 20+ miles per hour that the trees helped to minimize. The path was good in most places with some cracks in the asphalt that we tried to navigate around. Some rolling hills along the way, which we walked up a couple to avoid over doing our knees. It was a beautiful Tuesday afternoon and we only saw one other bike and 3 people walking in our 10 mile loop. The ride back to the ferry was far easier than the ride out as it was mostly downhill. I rated the ride a 4 of 5 only because it was a bit difficult to get from the ferry to the bike path, other than that it was a great paved trail.
Came here for my first skating trail as a beginner it was great! Lots of sticks around so beware of your step but other than that will be coming here a lot more! Loved it
This trail needs open parking spaces! Most of the parking spots are blocked off!

This is a multi use bike trail for everyone to enjoy.
This is a good trail, but if you start in Milford and do the entire checkmark there are a lot of street crossings. The pretty parts of the trail are nice and shady and wooded, but there is a fair amount of commercial areas that you have to get through. It’s nice and flat and there are lots of parking areas along the way. My gps did not take me to a parking lot but when I put the trail into AllTrails I got accurate directions.
The claim of this being a 61 mile trail is very deceptive. Almost 40 miles of this trail is nearly unrideable except for mountain bikes (and even that would be unpleasant). We are experience riders and were on hybrid bikes with wide tires and front suspension. And while our plan was to cycle 40 miles from Willimantic to E. Hampton, we only did the first 10 mile section from Willimantic to James L. Goodwin State Forest.
The trail started out as just OK, but deteriorated in less than 2 miles. After crossing S. Brook Rd, the trail the trail was extremely gnarly and super overgrown. When we reached Goodwin State Forest, we were so happy to bail out and call it quits! Luckily, we had a SAG vehicle with us so we weren't forced to cycle back over the same awful trail.
Be warned, the entire trail we rode from Willimantic to Goodwin Forest was large, loose gravel, and the scenery is incredibly boring. There are places where the trail is extremely rough. At S. Brook Rd. the trail becomes unrideable, expect by maybe some die-hard mountain bikers. We used our SAG van to pop into other points along the trail from Goodwin to E. Hampton the trail only seemed to get even worse.
Honestly, just a really unpleasant ride.
Trail is well maintained, very few bumps, and flat. It's listed as 6.6 miles long but I clocked it at closer to 7.5 miles. I gave it 4 stars because it's not really a very scenic trail.
Went on a ride just after 1pm. There were a lot of people. Some are so clueless that there are others that might want to use the trails. On a 90 degree day there were kids path side selling cold drinks and ice cream. At least they are out of the house. Path condition was nice. The path is maintained nicely and it’s clean. Wish there was a trash a can of two or few along the path as I saw many doggie poop gabs just left on the side of the path. Over all it was a good ride. Next time I would go in the morning or late evening to see how the crows is. Enjoy!
We (5) Friends Have Biked This Trail in It’s Sections from E. Hampton to Willimantic for Many Years. We Have Always Considered it to be 4-5 Star Rated, (For a Gravel Trail). Since 2015, We Have Switched to E-Bikes which makes the Trail 3x more FUN !! Having the Best of Both Sun & Shady Sections, It Has Only One small Section of about 300’ Near the Start leaving E.Hampton Where it’s sandy & .Loose
It is such a lovely trail. The view is gorgeous, either from the ocean or from the land. It goes through a few towns, all lovely and friendly. There are shops along the trail for you to stop by for ice cream, coffee or lemonade. There are a few road crossing, but the cars are very friendly and stop to let cyclists cross. The destination Bristol is just beautiful! Some areas are in the open, so the wind can be your friend or not …..
