Chaparral Rail Trail

Bland HS to Farmersville

November, 2018 by kimperez

My kids go to Bland. I live 10 minutes from this trail and run it often. It would be perfect if we could resolve 2 issues: Dogs. Lots of them. Every time I go. I’ve been chased multiple times.
From Bland to Farmersville is great, but the “crushed rock” in the opposite direction from the school is not even walkable, much less a running surface. I hope we continue to see improvements to this trail. It’s almost a gem, but could be better.

Addtl from previous review. Tip: park at the Medpark DCTA station which is mid-trail. The ride North or South.

A-Train Rail Trail

Just OK

October, 2018 by dnewgard

All paved which is nice. It’s a city trail along train tracks so anywhere a train crosses a road, you get to play with pedestrian ‘walk/don’t walk’ signals. I hit about 5-8 on the northern half of this trail.

If any city trail maintenance people read this; This trail would get 5 stars from me if you erected small trail map podiums ever 1.5 miles with You Are Here markings. Or just put a nice stake in the ground with mile markers like Little Elm does on their trails.

Trail STILL closed. Lower half is under water at 380 trail head (you can’t even enter the trail head area).

A-Train Rail Trail

Great trail....except...

June, 2018 by brettcornell

Was glad to find this trail relatively close to home. Fairly well maintained and a nice ride with two exceptions: 1. Far too many intersections with pretty heavy automobile traffic. Too many drivers has very little regard for bikers and you have to be extremely careful crossing. 2. In the Lake Dallas area for some reason they have placed giant barricades over 3/4 of the bike paths at each intersection with the road. These are very close to the road, requiring even more caution and manipulating to not only avoid traffic, but navigate around to continue on the trail. I even scraped my leg on one barricade while trying to get by it.

Cottonwood Trail

Too risky

April, 2018 by mb404

I wish I had found the reviews here before deciding to ride my bike on the Cottonwood Trail two days ago, because it was a bizarre experience. I got on the path from the White Rock Creek Trail and it started out fine, but not for long. I found myself riding past sketchy characters and some homeless men right off to the side of the path. I did not see another person walking nor biking the entire time and once the path led to the freeway where it takes a sharp right, it continued to look worse...no one else around, trash, and graffiti everywhere. It didn't feel right to me, so I decided to turn around and head back. Then it became really bizarre. I was pedalling quite fast because I wanted to quickly get beyond the rough area that the path runs through and as I approached riding under an overpass I came upon two police officers with their guns drawn. I slowed down and looked around and saw that there were several officers all around with guns drawn or ready, including the overpass. One of the them yelled down to me to get out of there quickly. So, I ended up on my bike in a rough part of town with no way to get home. I was lost and thankfully had my phone on me and was able to reach someone to come pick me up. (I later found the sad reason for all those police officers being on/around the path.) Needless to say, I will NEVER ride that path again because it is too risky.

Cottonwood Trail

didn’t feel safe

Used to riding the White Rock Creek Trail and wanted to try this trail. Unfortunately didn’t feel safe for a woman riding alone. Disappointing.

A-Train Rail Trail

Great find!

March, 2018 by choirmom_tl

Having moved to North Dallas from South Dallas, I have been hard pressed to find some nice trails. This trail does not disappoint. There are frequent crossings that can be tricky. What is nice is that there are areas one can veer off for more challenging biking up hills. There are beautiful neighborhoods throughout. I will look forward to taking this trail again.
4 stars because at times the trail feels a little unsafe and remote from a female perspective.

Cottonwood Trail

Johned

I rode the cottonwood trail Friday January 4, 2018. There was a lot of trash on and along the trail. There are spectacular parts of this trail going under highway bridges which are truly unique. Some disadvantaged folks loitering along trail from time to time, not wanting to bother anyone. Ignore them and they'll ignore you.
It was a privelidge to ride this trail, being from Kansas City I'll say Dallas trails are tremendous, and should be appreciated by all.
