Overview
The Barge Canal Trail runs for 3.3 miles through West Sacramento, alongside the Sacramento River Deepwater Ship Canal. The trail is an out-and-back route, with only one access point at the eastern end of the trail.
About the Route
Leaving from the trail's only access point, the Barge Canal Access, the trail heads west along a newly paved route. This new route is sometimes paralleled by a dirt trail route, and winds alongside the canal, with wide expansive views of the canal and nearby open grasslands.
After crossing underneath the first bridge, the asphalt route disappears, and the remainder of the route is comprised of crushed stone. The route continues for another 2.5 miles along this crushed stone path until reaching a metal gate that marks the end of public access.
The Barge Canal Trail runs between Barge Canal Access (West Sacramento), where parking is available, and a dead end near Levee Access Rd. (West Sacramento).
