American Tobacco Trail

Awesome Trail

February, 2017 by randycroce

We traveled there from NJ and stayed at a local hotel a few miles down the road. La Qunita was clean and accepted our dog at no extra charge. We parked at 3 different spots on our 3 days of riding there this past weekend. In the South Point Mall parking lot, at the New Hope Church Road Parking Lot and at the Kroger Parking Lot, with absolutely no problems. We rode the entire length and other than a couple of less respectful people not caring about anyone but themselves, we had a Great time. The trails are used by walkers, joggers, families, novice and very inexperienced riders. We did see a police officer on the trail on day 3. I contacted the local Police Department prior to taking to the trails, and was advised that other than a couple of incidents, that the trail is an excellent place to bike, and that there is no specific location presenting additional hazards. We cautiously rode north to Durham on our 1st day (Friday) and the trail was not very busy at all. As we neared Martin Luther Blvd, there was a growing number of younger folks using the trail for getting around, but none of them were in any disrespectful or threatening. There were also a few just hanging in the area along side of the trails, but were also not threatening to us in any way. Days 2 and 3 we covered from south of the South Point Mall which went from asphalt to finely packed sand and gravel. There were many many people on the trails on Saturday and Sunday, but there was plenty of room for getting around and not at all a "Too Crowded"place to be. We met a few people through out our days and just had an awesome time. We put in about 70 miles during or 3 day trek! and would love to return and bring more of our family with us next time.

Endor Iron Furnace Greenway

Endor Iron Furnace Greenway - Rollerblading

February, 2017 by skmiller88

As mentioned, parking areas are somewhat hard to find. You have a couple of options for parking - park in the very back of the Timberwood Apartment Complex located off Wicker Street. There is also a parking area close to the intersection of Carbonton Rd and Halifax located at approximately 700 Carbonton Road. You may also choose to connect from the Kiwanis Parking area located off of Wicker Street (this connection is tricky to find and is not rollerblade friendly). There are also random locations along the trail that offer an opportunity to connect. The trail runs along the back side of Applebees, First Bank and Frank Theatres Spring Lane.

In terms of rollerblading - I would probably only do the section from 700 Carbonton and head NW (along Carbonton Road and under the overpass). The section from the Timberwood Apts. to 700 Carbonton is a little rough. It is definitely doable, but not the smoothest riding.

Its a good trail. There are some road crossings to be aware of and it does run through the shopping center. All-in-all it works as a nice paved trail. If blading, please keep in mind there are some hills along the trail. Please be sure to have good brakes and know how to brake properly down hills.

Happy Trails!

Deep River Rail Trail

Wonderful setting

February, 2017 by jackritterskamp

We biked the main part of the trail and loved it. The access from the parking area down to the trail is steep in places and not suitable for narrow tires in the loose gravel area. The trail itself is hard-packed gravel and well maintained. There are benches and trash cans. We look forward to the extension.

Roger F. Snyder Greenway

Nice, but nothing fancy

February, 2017 by jackritterskamp

We parked at the city park as suggested, rode south to Main St then doubled back and along US 52 to Salisbury Ave (using the wide paved path made, bumpy by tree roots). After crossing the train tracks we explored and went north across Salisbury to the end of the greenway. This section is not on the trail map since it is very difficult (the gravel is loose so we parked and walked much of that section). Turning south from Salisbury is the best part of the ride as it's an old rail bed and is well paved. Near the middle of that leg is the Glenn St parking, accessed by a walking ramp.

Great Trail--car break in

December, 2016 by ms.steph.scott

Love the trail. Cars are being broken into at Fayetteville Street access point next to Southpoint mall. Two this week.

Muddy Creek Greenway

Good Trail

Short, but very good trail. Only 3 miles from end to end, we get a six-mile ride with a flat, well-paved asphalt surface. Several good parking areas and easy access for bikes, walking or jogging. Nice peaceful and relaxing setting.

Great Starter Trail, Flat, Shaded in Parts

September, 2016 by prospecthillbb

The city let us know the parking has been expanded for this trail so we tried walking part of it with out-of-town relatives. They liked it. We are taking up biking and need a flat trail to begin to get in shape. It's great. There are families (walking, biking), and dog walkers on a holiday like today. There are SERIOUS back and forth bikers during the weekdays. Few birds this time (too hot).

As to the trail ending in private property: We asked people and they said it was OK to use that part. It is more of a meander (those who bike FAST for exercise stay off that part!) Both the right and left fork end in a turn around loop--great for biking. The smaller side paths lead to homes. There is a Tiny Library on that part of the path, too.

As other said: well maintained The commemorative trees being plants along the way are a sweet touch. It looks like the south end of the trail will soon use a new parking lot near the elementary/middle school ball fields, now under construction.

It would be nice IF they added a toilet at the south end, too.

American Tobacco Trail

One of North Carolina's best

Nice trail through three counties. I usaually start at the southern trail head near New Hill and ride up to the I-40 bridge near Southpoint Mall and then turn around. That is a 30 mile round trip. The trail north of the interstate has too many busy road crossings and is more residential but you might want to explore this area at least once. The last half mile into downtown Durham is nice though and ends near the baseball park.

There are water and restroom stops along the trail which is a very good feature for a long distance trail. Many other trails I've been on have little to no water. The trail is almost entirley under the tree canopy. Good chance you will see some wildlife. In the fall some of the land adjacent to the trail is open to hunting so you may see hunters using the trail to access the gameland. The southern seven miles of the trail is fine gravel while the remaining north miles are paved. There are more scenic trails out there but the ATT is a very good place to ride or run for exercise.

Forest Creek Access

Too much sand!

Terrible trail for riding bikes or even walking. The trail is getting wider in spots as people try to find a way around the deep sand. It does provide a connection to the nice Forest Creek Trail and Reservoir Loop Trail.

ATT wimberly road construction

Beautiful ATT. The trail at Wimberly Road has a small detour while road construction is ongoing ( July 4 2016 ). Parking is still accessible at Wimberly Rd. Detour is a few hundred feet and is very well marked.

Salem Lake Trail

Beautiful trail

This is a very nice trail. As long as you don't mind running on hard sand/dirt you will enjoy it. Ran the loop around the lake, mostly shaded, majority level. If in the area, take a lap around. I'm sure it's beautiful in the fall.
