Red Clay Creek Trail

The Anson Nixon Park is nice

September, 2017 by joelkring

We started our ride from the Anson Nixon Park. I had printed out a map of the park and written out turn by turn directions for the road section and still found the trail difficult to follow. From the parking lot we descended past pavilion #5 and crossed the small bridge. A look at the map I had printed told me to turn left (there were no signs at the trail junction). After a short steep climb and a quick descent we came to the first road crossing. There were crossing stripes on the road but they did not align with where you could ride your bike off and on to the curb. The trail was very narrow at places as it seemed to be an after thought, "maybe we can squeeze a trail in here". Few road crossings were clearly marked. At one point the trail crosses under a road, the trail at this point is just wide enough for one bike and when riding you can't see if anyone is coming from the other direction. We have ridden 80 different trails this year so far and this one is near the bottom of the list.

Parrish Trail

needs work

The trail is narrow as it follows a small creek. The trail is mostly wooded but the thick undergrowth at places meant not great scenery. Near the south end the trail enters an open field. The trail is just over one mile, definitely not 1.5 miles. A short road ride on South Street will take you to the Red Clay Creek Trail and into the Anson Nixon Park.

Creek Road Trail

Scenic but rough at places

September, 2017 by joelkring

We rode our recumbent bikes from South Bank Road near the Old London Tract Church (in PA) south through White Clay Creek park then on to the Pomeroy and Newark trail and finally the James F. Hall trail. There were a few rough sections and a couple of short steep hills but it was a fun ride. The trail has many signs where trails intersect the Creek Road Trail. We did notice that the "Creek Road Trail" is not listed on the signs. An adult with a group of school children helped us to find our way at the newer bridge that crosses the creek. By connecting to the other 2 trails we were able to turn the ride into a 15 mile adventure, still kinda short but pleasant.

Springlawn Trail

Scenic but rough

September, 2017 by joelkring

Hard to believe that this was a road, the trail has many large stones, might be okay for mountain bikes. On the plus side the scenery is wonderful. We rode this trail in mid to late September and the leaves that had already fallen made seeing the rocks difficult.

Heritage Rail Trail County Park

Pleasantly Surprised

September, 2017 by nightshine1

I was hesitant to ride on crushed stone, as I never had before, and prefer asphalt. Today, I rode between York and just past Glen Rock. What a great trail! The inclines are easy. The crossings are few. The trail is very well maintained.

I highly recommend this trail to anyone.

Enola Low Grade Trail

Quarryville to Atglen, take two.

September, 2017 by joelkring

We tried to ride this section of trail last year but got turned around when we came upon deep mud. This year we had a plan. I used the satellite view on the TrailLink map to determine which roads we could use to access the trail. We started at Quarryville and rode east, the trail is in great condition, smooth fine stone from edge to edge. Shortly after crossing under State Street (PA 372) the trail becomes 2 slightly worn single tracks over very large (for a rail trail) stones. Between Mt. Pleasant Rd. and Lamparter Rd. we came upon deep soft sandy soil. A truck had left 9 inch deep tire ruts in the trail. Even with 1 1/2 inch tires the sand was too soft to ride through. We returned to our car and drove to Lamparter Rd. to continue our adventure. From there we rode west about half a mile to the sand pit then headed east toward Atglen. The trail surface varied greatly, sometimes very smooth more often rough. Most of the road crossings were steep descents to the road then steep climbs back to the railroad grade. One crossing, I think it was Orchard Buck Rd. was a steep rough climb, lifting bikes over guard rails on both sides of the road then a steep rocky descent back to the trail. There was a short section near the end of the trail where the weeds were waist high, but we kept going. So we can now say that we did the entire Enola Low Grade trail. We give the trail a low grade, but it was an adventure.

Baltimore and Annapolis Trail

B&A rail trail for cycling

September, 2017 by exploreh2o

today I did the first time the B&A trail with my wife. We cycled starting up by the Baltimore Airport and traveled all the way down to the trail and not realizing that you can actually continue on a cross over into Annapolis. That said the trail has gentle gradients and for Monday was amazingly busy just Beware of the crowds but it is a quick SafeRide plenty of rest stops and a beautiful environment.

Industrial Track Greenway Trail

Biked from New Castle to the Christiana River today. This portion of the trail is all paved except for the tunnel under 295 (stone), and a 50 - 100 foot section north of the tunnel (dirt). Total time walking the bike was around 5 minutes - tunnel is pretty dark. All the construction gates were open. Hopefully the small amount of paving at the tunnel will be done soon. The bridge over the Christiana is under construction.

If you park your car at the Battery Park tennis courts and bike this section of the Industrial Track and then cross Battery Park on the grass and bike the trail from Battery Park south along the Delaware, it's about 6.5 miles total, or 13 miles out and back on both. You can extend the miles by connecting the Battery Park trail with Route 9. Only saw a couple of other bikers.

Note: there is a confusing sign that says "End of Trail" as you approach 295 from the New Castle side - continue on the quiet road, then you will see the first tunnel and the trail restarts. My guess is that the sign is marking the transition from trail to the short stretch of barely used road.

WB&A Trail

Getting back into biking!

August, 2017 by sue_fox021257

Many years ago I lived on Bragers Rd. The trail at that time was not paved & not maintained by the county. We used a tractor with a blade to plow out in the winter. Some of my family resides in one of the houses between Patuxent & Conway Roads. Reason I am mentioning is that the trail at that point is also a private driveway. They don't live in a McMansion, they live on a farm that has been in their family for 5 generations. Please know that they have to use the trail to get to their homes.
That all being said, I love the trail. My husband & I are getting back into casual bike riding. The trail is very level with only one spot that is a little challenging but we are getting better. It is amazing how different it is now. There were a lot of man hours that went into clearing the trail. We also love the new parking at Patuxent Road. Very convenient to head either North or South. Finally, a great project using tax money!

Ben Cardin C&D Canal Recreational Trail

Historic canal, good workout trail, nice breeze off the water

August, 2017 by khrysinwythe

Didn't realize that the C&D and the Castle trail combined to make the 17 mile trail. The sign near Schaefer's Canal House restaurant gave me the impression that all of it was the C&D. Even the map on the trail link site says the C&D is the 12 mile from Delaware City to Cheapeake City. This was my 152 ride (trail) in 47 states.
Wife and I had some great crab bisque and Maryland chowder at Kath's Crab House at the end of the trail in Delaware City.
