Western Maryland Rail Trail

western Maryland trail

August, 2022 by aldo_desalvo

Great trail. Shaded for most of the route. Asphalt for all but two miles. The two miles goes around a spectacular tunnel that is closed for some reason. Very little cell service in little orleans which made it hard to find a he parking spot. The trail potentially could go over the Potomac to paw paw and connect to the cno. That has been scrapped for now. Most roots are Marked on the pavement which helps. You are on your own from Hancock to little orleans. Very remote.

Western Maryland Rail Trail

western Maryland

August, 2022 by aldo_desalvo

All asphalt except for two miles that passes a tunnel that hopefully will be open some day. It would be nice if the abandoned bridges over the Latinos could be added someday and connect to the cno canal trail. Mostly shaded. Cool bars in Hancock md. You have to not to park in Hancock but no on the western end (little orleans). Zero cell device near there

Rock Creek Trail (MD)

blind curves

July, 2022 by redlocs_99

Upfront: 14.1mi of 90% shade! 1/10th mile in is a decline if you start at MM0 at a Needwood Lake. Thus, you’ll have to climb this upon your return! 3-4 “steep” hills, are doable IF you are prepared for them. Though one (maybe2) are marked, the signs (w my level) are way too late-no chance to get a decent pedaling pace nor into the correct gear when you come upon the incline after coming round a curve Conversely, once you top it and are appreciative of the downward cruise, there are immediate curves and blind spots, so braking to adjust, you often lose this advantage Fairly new rider, so skill level is in development. Weekends I try to do 25-35mi stretches of challenging courses, weekday one or two flat 10milers just to prep for weekend This one is mid level for me, mainly because This was my first go at it and wasn’t sure if what to expect

Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

July, 2022 by david156

Very nice trail: Started in Shippensburg where it’s paved the first mile or so, then crushed stone. Adjoining path along the NW side for horses. I like the combination historic & agriculture markers making it equally informational. Mostly shaded, but one stretch went through an alfalfa field and the scent was wonderful! A first cousin to honeysuckle! The NE portion, the newest section toward Carlisle, goes under large power lines about 2 miles, so it’s exposed and no shade. I’ll ride it again!

Shaded trail walking into the woods¿

July, 2022 by monica.ingudam

Walked around the lake, it’s shaded and nice even walking at 11:30 am. You can get around 3.1 miles around the lake. Crossed the creek too, I really enjoyed the walk. Will walk here again, check out the pictures!

Huntingdon and Broad Top Rail Trail

Not a Great Traill at all

June, 2022 by FrankJ

This lonely trail has a HORRIBLE surface for the vast majority of its length. There were very few crushed stone areas, although not packed down enough to keep from sinking in some spots.

I rode the entire trail today round trip. My odometer read 23.70 miles. The ride was not fun. The trail is mostly stones, NOT crushed, and VERY rough.

Additionally, for this entire trip, I saw a total of five other trail users, all walking, not cycling - even though it was a beautiful day. This was my first trip on this trail, and my last unless I find that it has been re-surfaced. It just wasn't worth it.

Georgia Avenue Trail

Optional side spur off the Intercounty Connector (ICC) Trail

June, 2022 by dtread

The Georgia Avenue Trail offers a nice option for north and south access from the ICC Trail along Georgia Ave. There's a shopping plaza north of Emory Lane (where the Olney Manor Recreational Park and Swim Center is located) and it takes one at least part of the way to downtown Olney. Hopefully someday it will be extended southward beyond Norbeck Road to connect it to the Matthew Henson Trail. Check out the many hawks and vultures in the air or on the microwave or cell phone towers near the ICC Park and Ride lot. Use caution when crossing ICC off-ramp; there is limited sight distance.

Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

Nice extension near Newville

June, 2022 by dcar777

Today the Newville parking lot was crowded, but the trail was quiet and calm, as always. We were happy to see the bridge completed so we were able to ride beyond the Newville parking area to the trail’s end at Greenhill Road. This trail continues to be very well maintained, and we appreciate all the people (and fellow-donors) who work to keep it that way. It is a very pleasant ride, even for those of us who are older.

Great Asphalt Trail

May, 2022 by eric.janssen.315

Great asphalt trail away from everything. Started in Hancock Maryland and headed west. It is Memorial Day weekend and was not crowded at all. There are a few bumps from roots, but overall trail is in great condition. Very easy to ride 20 miles today. We plan to start in Hancock and head east tomorrow.
