Beatiful Trail

May, 2017 by chicago30

I love rails-to-trails and this one is a beauty. I run instead of bike so i did 7 miles that took you by creeks, mountains, and ponds. Awesome morning.

Peavine Trail (NC)

Great for brisk walking!

December, 2016 by simbut1

Wide, smooth crushed gravel surface on level trail on old railroad bed. Great for brisk walking! Please do not pave this trail. We have many other paved trails in Marion, but no other resilient surface for 77 year old legs. Cudos to McDowell Trails Association and the City of Marion.

Thermal Belt Rail-Trail

Getting better each time!

December, 2016 by neverest

GREAT improvements to this trail, got to commend Rutherford Outdoor Coalition for their oversight & the Committee that helps guide the management for the future of the trail. New mile & 1/2 mile markers are great for those who want to keep up with their fitness goals. There are 4.5 miles of compacted gravel for hikers, runners, bikers & equestrians to be "in the country" and 3.5 miles (but more in the planning) of asphalt that access the more developed areas. Something for everyone and the BEST part is that its a project that the public can have input into & help make into their own!

Nice Trail

October, 2016 by tbaileyva

My wife and I (in our 60s) rode the trail this summer. The reviews were spot on. We started in Johnson City since we were heading north on I-81. The end of the dedicated trail goes along a fairly busy highway and one does need to watch for vehicles pulling in and out. The part from JC to Elizabethton is mostly down-hill (but not so much we had to get off our bikes), in the woods, and has some stops/interpretive sites. Trail surface is fine packed gravel/dirt, no worries for hybrids. 4 stars for the busy part in Elizabethton.

Point Lookout Trail

Fun walk!

September, 2016 by beth_mckinney

I've taken my dog here for the last two days (parked on the Ridgecrest side) and it was a good time. It's an easy paved path, the climb isn't so bad (gradual and steady) with great views. Will be a great regular walk with the dog to wear her out and work on my legs.

Kingsport Greenbelt

Great ride for us.

August, 2016 by roxy56

My husband and I both in our 60's did this ride and loved it. It's a well paved trail and easy. We took our time and stopped to take pictures and enjoyed being out on the bikes. We began at the Exchange and rode to the end, then we rode back to the oppisite end. Stayed only on paved trail.
A deer even crossed in front of us. We plan to do this again maybe I'm the fall.

Tweetsie trail is a great trail for bike riding. I had an enjoyable ride to Elizabethton and back.

Erwin Linear Trail

Very pleasant ride

July, 2016 by randyasmith

Son and I got off at exit 40 and parked at the parking lot at the industrial park. We rode to the end and back which is roughly about 8.5 miles. Very easy ride, nice scenery with bridges, benches, picnic areas, etc. Close to the other end, there's a McDonalds and convenient store you can easily access for whatever you may want to rehydrate with. Yes, a decent amount of it gets close to I-26, but it doesn't seem obtrusive to me. Plenty of trees, streams, birds, and it wasn't crowded even on a Sunday afternoon. Great for biking, walking, and running.

French Broad River Greenway

July, 2016 by subscriptionsnads

The trail extends further north with dirt road, but very interesting trail.

South Fork New River Greenway

New River Greenway

June, 2016 by pstephentriad

I live in Boone NC. Finding a relatively level place to ride and walk can be a challenge in the mountains. The South Fork New River Greenway, along with its sister Boone Greenway provide a very nice trail system.

The New River Greenway, just completed the underpass under route 421 earlier this year. With this underpass, there is now easy and safe access from Brookshire park, north to the soccer fields, and south under US-421 and along a section of lightly traveled road, to the Boone Greenway. These two Greenways now provide a continuous 7 to 8 mile Greenway along the South Fork of the New River. Excellent for short bike rides or walking/running.

Side trails lead to some more hilly terrain. And the Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park is only about a mile away.

I understand there are plans to extend the trail system south toward Blowing Rock and North towards Todd. I certainly hope these planned extensions are completed soon.
