Erie Canalway Trail

Long Trail with some issues along the road

February, 2018 by sanmartm

Last summer, a group of 10 friends did the trail from Buffalo to Albany. Before we started the trail in Buffalo, we ride our bikes to Niagara Falls in Canada. Great experience and wonderful ride, except for walking the bike over the border.
The "trail" between Buffalo and Albany has some gaps but in general is ok. There is a small section before Rochester where the trail is in horrible condition. The good thing is that there are good hotels in Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester (Marriott) so you can accomodate your trip to stay in a nice hotel after a long ride. There is only one stop where you have to sleep in a run-down motel, but, hey! No trip is perfect!

Albany County Rail Trail

Favorite trail

November, 2017 by gigischolz

I love this trail and ride it 3 - 4 times a week. The western section from Slingerlands to Voorheesville is not yet paved, but is rideable with a fitness or mountain bike.

There is a parking lot on South Pearl street, the eastern end of the trail. There are bike tools and a pump located at this lot, as well as CDPHP rental bikes.

Cheshire Rail Trail (Cheshire Branch Rail Trail)

Nice ride in the fall

October, 2017 by albern36

Went from the southern end of the trail on the MA border to Troy. The trail seems to be in better shape than some of the other reviewers experienced. There are some roots, loose gravel, rocks, but nothing that any decent mountain bike can't handle. I wouldn't take a hybrid on this trail and forget about a street bike. The view of Monadnock from the Rockwood Pond was stunning and like a postcard with the changing color of the leaves. As far as finding the trail head, that one is easy. Set your GPS to McCallister Road, Fitzwilliam and you can't miss it. You can see the gate and a sign that directs you to the start of the trail. I will continue on the trail from Troy and write a second review.

Ashuelot Rail Trail

Not for road, hybrid, cyclocross!

October, 2017 by truedoc

Very much disappointed. From Keen, I both tried for this trail and Cheshire trail, too. Compared to other trails in other states, these two rails are both so poor in views and surface conditions except first 5 miles. Only good for MTB!

Albany County Rail Trail

A green oasis

October, 2017 by akitalady

I and my dog usually turn left on the trail out of Delmar, towards the South Pearl trail head. Within a few minutes, you feel as if you are in the middle of the forest - it's peaceful, with lots of wildflowers and wildlife. I regularly see deer, turkeys, and once, a bald eagle.

I feel fortunate to live so close to this wonderful resource, and greatly appreciate the time and resources that went into creating it.

Ballston Veterans Bike Path

Nice trail with occassional wildlife sightings and lots of rabbits

October, 2017 by tjcollins

This is one of my favorite rail trails near me. My husband and I have walked and biked this trail on evenings and weekends to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible.

We enjoy the occassional sightings of deer, groundhogs and snapping turtles. Also, the frequent train that passes by.

However, we have stopped walking here for safety reasons due to a group of dirtbike riders who have no regard for the rule that prohibits the use of motor vehicles on the trail. It saddens me that I cannot walk there anymore.

Mass Central Rail Trail

Beautiful soft running trail

October, 2017 by alicemark.md

This is a lovely quiet running trail with a smooth, wide, soft dirt surface. Park in the lot off of Thomas Street and then run - it's a slight incline going up that you don't notice until you turn around and come back and are cooking. An absolutely beautiful run through the forest and next to water!! No dogs allowed in some sections so leave the pupper at home.

Mass Central Rail Trail

Dogs Allowed (in spots)

October, 2017 by bolts222

While there are portions of the frail where dogs are not allowed there are other portions where you CAN bring your dog. The area of the trail between Barre and Rutland is dog friendly. From the parking lot off of Rt. 140 in West Boylston you can bring a dog about half way up that portion of the trail. The dog walking portion is about a mile and a half each way.

Cheshire Rail Trail (Cheshire Branch Rail Trail)

Biked Cheshire and Ashuelot late Sept 2017. Parts were in good, not great condition, some mud, rocks, narrow grassy trail. huge mud puddle about 9 miles into Cheshire trail. Its Access point at NH-MA line impossible to find. Had to go to Keene to find trails.

We have walked this trail numerous times and just love it.
Bikers need to either use a bell or announce "On your left" when coming upon walkers/joggers.
Wish there were mile markers from end to end.

Ashuwillticook Rail Trail

Very scenic

September, 2017 by g.conner1

This trail is the most scenic bike trail I've been on. Lots of great mountain views. It is fairly level and in great shape. Very easy to bike from end to end. Lots of places to stop along the way.

Ashuwillticook Rail Trail

Saved my day

September, 2017 by jimgraw

Love this trail, we have been on it many times going from Lanesboro to Adams and back. The trail is well kept, the air is fresh and clean plus it always seems a bit cooler, which is important on those hot summer days, plus the views are spectacular.
Recently about 1 mile in I got a flat, I turned around loaded my bike back on the rack and drove to the bike shop in Adams. The store was closed but the owner was outside in his car, just about to leave. He spotted me going to his front door, so he got out asked what was wrong and proceeded to reopen his store to fix my flat. It was not an easy repair, rear tire that had been on the bike for a while. He persisted, completed the repair and charged me a very reasonable rate for tube and labor.
I could not be more thankful...I got back on the trail right out his front door, rode down to Lanesboro and back to Adams where I had a very nice dinner at a trailside restaurant. Perfect ending!
