we started in Belleville at library park and went south, hoping to go to tunnel and turn around. tunnel and path were closed off after 3.4 miles - there was a detour around on roads but I had kids with me and wanted to stay on the path so we just returned to Belleville. Beautiful path.
It is a short, flat asphalt trail, so if the kids get tired it doesn’t take long to get back to the car. Also you can stop and have them swing in the playground. New this year is the frisbee golf. Share the trail with them.
Rode from Monroe to Mineral Point on a gravel bike loaded down with camping gear and it was just fine. It was a weekday; other traffic on trail was minimal. Some really pretty segments right along a gently-gurgling Pecatonica, other segments a slog, but that tends to be the case on any rail-trail. I did not experience any of the very uncomfortable conditions other bike travelers have reported - maybe a product of the weather, or it being a weekday, or the trail association doing a good job with upkeep. Either way, don't feel like a mountain bike or fat bike is necessary, and if you're concerned about ATV traffic go on a weekday.
I got an AirBnB in Dane so I could ride this trail again and it is still my favorite for road biking. It is immaculate and flat, with nary a tree root nor chipmunk hole on the path. I rode end-to-end two days in a row and it was spectacular both times. It's a good 20-mile roundtrip of lovely scenery, river views, mostly uninterrupted rural beauty. The section in town is fine though chopped up in short bursts of pathway, but also immaculate. Especially once you cross Highway 12 heading north it is virtually empty of kids and larger bike parties and street crossings. A joy to ride.
Do note: Just before Mile Marker 10, the path is closed and you have to turn around.
Started in Brodhead and made it to Albany. Very quiet and there are some beautiful bridges, but it's pretty sandy in some places
Nice flat trail, the majority of which is paved and shaded. There is a couple of miles of crushed stone but it was fairly smooth. There are some rough paved patches but overall it was a quiet and peaceful ride through farm country. We rode the entire 14 miles and back stopping in Capron at The Dairy Barn for fantastic pulled pork sandwiches and in Poplar Grove for some fresh squeezed lemonade at the Popular Grind.
This path is in decent shape North of Harlem Road, but is in horrible shape South of it. The path is cracked throughout and has grass growing in it which lends to a very bumpy ride, especially on bikes that don't handle bumps very well. There are several busy intersections that need to be crossed. This path would be great for walking, and mountain biking or climbing training, but just isn't terribly fun due to the state of the path.
This time I started at the stateline trailhead and went south to Cedarville Road. It was a beautiful shady ride, I saw owls and birds and chipmunks and a few geese. Not much traffic, but about a quarter mile north of ORangeville, there was a huge tree broken over the whole trail, with just enough room to squeeze through. Then the following few miles between Brush Creek Road and Lane Road were really choppy: lots of shallow holes in the path and not a ride I would want to do on a road bike. It was scenic and private, and I loved that, but am glad for the shock absorbers on my hybrid. This would be a splendid trail if they paved it, but that seems unlikely. Still, a gorgeous ride, just one where you have to pay acute attention to the path in order to avoid some pitfalls....
I rode from Gotham to Twin Bluff yesterday and wouldn't recognize the lovely trail from the reviews posted here. It must have been overhauled In the past year or two. It was well maintained and lovely. There's even a rest stop with a portable toilet, covered area with a picnic table and trash receptacle. Great scenery!
Flat, paved and tree covered, what could be better. A few places pavement was in need of repair but very passable. From Capron about a half mile the tree covering was not as heavy but it was cloudy at the time so not a problem. We started on the Stonebridge trailhead which was crushed gravel and transitioned smoothly to the Long Prairie trail. Just a wonderful ride. Restaurants in Capron did not open till ten or eleven but there was a Casey’s gas station.
Went on a Friday in the afternoon and there were few people out. This trail has some great scenery and the Sauk area has a lot of things to see and do. The trail is 100% paved and is an easy ride. You can also visit the chamber of commerce building for more trail information, a bike trail pass, and free parking.
My intentions were to finish my biking day in Wisconsin that I had started on the Great Sauk State Trail by traveling the US Highway 12 Path from Sauk City to Middleton, WI. Of the total 18 miles, the separated path totals about 11 miles. I decided to use some back roads to limit the stretch I would be using the paved shoulder on Highway 12. This turned out to be a poor choice for me as I only had the energy to make it to Springfield Corners. On the way back I stayed the whole time on the Highway 12 path or paved shoulder. The countryside viewed from the back roads was beautiful, but the grades were steeper, with more hills, than just staying on US 12. This is logical as the US 12 highway is a modern limited access highway which was designed to have low hills and flatter grades.
The separated path is paved and still in good riding condition. The paved shoulder is separated from the outside highway lane by about 2 feet of extra pavement and maybe 2 feet of rumble strip to warn any vehicles diverging from the lanes. For the bicyclist, the paved riding width is about 1-bicycle width wide. The paved shoulder was in good riding condition, but weeds are growing in the pavement cracks and this might eventually cause some distortions.
I was comfortable riding on the paved shoulder. This is acceptable for experienced adult riders but not for families. There is traffic noise of course but the countryside is rural open lands to view. If I had stayed on Rte 12 I would have been able to make it to Middleton and back.
