Kennebec River Rail Trail

Fun but easy

September, 2019 by christine13

This really was a very pretty rail trail, with lots of fun stopping places on either end (and in the middle). In Augusta on one end, and Gardiner on the other, and Hallowell in the middle, you have lots of options for food and drink. The trail is super easy and flat. 13 miles round trip.

Between Saco & Bug Light Park is best

September, 2019 by christine13

We did this in two parts: Kennebunk-Biddeford, and South Portland-Saco. To do just Kennebunk to Biddeford & back is a bit too easy and dull - straight, flat, 12 miles round trip; although, you might want to reserve time to explore downtown Biddeford. Biscuits! Doughnuts! Brewery! Etc.

The Portland-Saco stretch is more varied. If you start from Bug Light Park, like we did, I think it comes out to more than 20 miles; for a shorter ride, start from the parking lot on the trail proper. There is the most excellent empanada place in Saco where you should try to have lunch. The marsh is fun with interesting birds.

Back Cove Trail

Level, popular trail

Interesting to be able to see the entire loop from the starting point. Only one real incline at the overpass. We added an out and back on Eastern Promenade Trail to get 9.9 total miles.

This is a 3.6 mile loop around the bay. The trail gets a lot of use, which makes it very safe. Only one hill. Great trail for bikers, runners, or walkers.

Presidential Rail Trail

Well maintained and so pretty

July, 2019 by kate2030

Last July, I reported that the bridges were a pretty sketchy to go over with horses. I am so happy to report that the bridge's planks have been replaced. I've ridden several days lately and each time the gentlemen brush-hogging were so polite turning off their motors so they wouldn't spook the horses. All the bikes and hikers I have met are so sweet and friendly. I just love to ride my horses on this trail. Thank you to whomever is responsible for maintaining the P R/T!

Presidential Rail Trail

115/115B to Cherry Pond

March, 2019 by bonnie1397

We rode this stretch last fall. Beautiful ride. The trail is well maintained and we only saw a couple of people. My only complaint is that we had to pick a non-traditional place to park (intersection of 115/115B off the side of the road) because most of the public parking areas are not large enough or set up well enough to bring in and turn around a huge horse trailer, especially during the busy times. I would love to be able to ride from the Bowman but need to be sure that we can get turned around and not get blocked in. We may try that this summer. :)

West Milan Trail

Close to home

A few short miles from my home makes this trail an easily accessed exercise route. Currently groomed for snow machines, but rarely used, it is a quiet escape to experience the outdoors and walk the dogs.

Presidential Rail Trail

Great scenery on a rough trail

October, 2018 by joelkring

Having ridden over 120 Rail-Trails in 16 states, I can say with confidence that this is NOT a well maintained trail. We started our ride at the parking lot just west of Gorham on the,"Smooths out" section of the trail. It was nowhere near smooth. The first bridge we crossed had broken out boards on one side and a hole in the decking. The falling leaves hid some of the large stones that dotted the two single tracks that were much of the trail. We rode beyond the high point of the trail but turned around after 10 miles. This was some of the roughest 20 miles of rail-trail that I've ridden and I've ridden over 4,000 miles this year.

Try to avoid Biddeford

October, 2018 by shrink

Most of this trail is over packed earth, which is satisfactory, except following rain. The 4.5+ miles through Biddeford are poorly marked (download a map) and often hazardous. Scarborough marsh is beautiful and the rest of the trail is pleasant, often scenic. I rode the entire trail north one day and south the next. If I were to do it again, I would cut it into two smaller trails, and avoid Biddeford.

Presidential Rail Trail

wonderful cycling

September, 2018 by keogan5

We biked the rail trail starting in Conway and going about halfway down and back. Next day we drove to lower parking area and biked up to where we had ended previous day then back. This trail is a gem, hopefully the trail club will be able to keep the cycling/walking/horseback section separate from ATV section. It has beautiful scenery, quiet, easy access parking areas. Get out there and see what you are missing!

West Milan Trail

My wife and I attempted to bike this on September 12th starting at the southern endpoint and found it to be very heavily overgrown. Not suitable for bikes, at least not for folks of our ability level.
