Did this trail in the summer of 2024. I agree with some of the previous reviewers that signage could be a little clearer but that's a MINOR concern. The ride was quite pleasant & would make a great lunch hour break for locals. Absolutely no issues with road surfaces and traffic on the nearby highway was very light that day so no competing with cars. Very short trail so make sure you have other activities planned. Visit nearby Hoyt's Landing on the CT river for a nice end of ride picnic :-)
I’m not a trail master so take this with a grain of salt. I thought the trail was pretty good. I wanted a shorter trail with some scenery and this was good for exactly that. It was starting to rain so it cut my walk short however the trail was pretty well maintained with fresh wooden mulch to cover some of the wet areas. Not a lot of wildlife other than some birds, geese and butterflies. It was very peaceful and I will go back again
Last ride of 2024 and was it super! I have a gravel bike so no real issues with the multi-use aspect of the trail as it was in pretty good shape though you could expect to have a difficult time with skinny tires or after a prolonged dry spell. Very scenic, perhaps the most scenic trail I have ridden on in NH. I tacked on the portion into Claremont to get in the mileage and the part that closely parallels the highway is a bit sketchy.
My wife and I are both injured(fortunately not serious) after both of us thrown off our bikes simultaneously on a small poorly surfaced wooden bridge just north of Keene NH. The wooden boards were uneven and some rotted causing our bikes to wedge in a step-off causing us both to fall off our bikes. The trail had several road crossings just outside of the town of Keene which are very dangerous. There are tiny stop sign markings on the trail and no large or blinking light warnings on the crossing roads which have poor visibility in both directions due to curving of the road. I would not recommend this trail for transient travelers trying a new RT on vacation. This is for locals only who know the trail well in my opinion.
The scenery is very nice which is why I gave it more than one star. The surface is sand. Sometimes pretty well packed. Other times quite loose. It was doable with our hybrid bikes, but a lot of work and not much fun. Add to this a steady stream of dirt bikes and 4x4s kicking up dust and spewing fumes! Just not our kind of cycling.
We biked the entire northern half of the D&H Rail Trail to the NY state line. Was pleasantly surprised to find no ruts. Trail was mostly made up of crushed stone. It's mostly a scenic ride, I would recommend this Rail Trail.
We had a great time on this trail, which was easy to navigate. It was our first outing this season since we acquired an ATV for my wife and we enjoyed spending time together while exploring nature. We encountered people walking their dogs and bikers along the way. The trail was well-maintained and clean. We made sure to slow down and say hello to everyone we met. We will definitely be back on this trail again!
Cheshire Trail South. Rode north from State Line Circle toward Kenne. We are experienced road cyclists, now riding gravel bikes. We are looking for reasonably surfaced longer trails and hoped this would be one of them. Sadly, we found this trail to be rocky, rutted, with lots of roots, and uncleared blowdown. The vigilance required to remain upright made it difficult to enjoy the beauty all around. The suddenly occurring steep inclines to roads seemed borderline dangerous. If we lived closer it would be a great trail to walk with the dogs
just walked the D & H trail from granville center to middle granville. really enjoyed the walk out toward middle granville but on the way back while walking through the farm (which was a delightful experience on the first trip through, seeing calves and cows) but then were charged by two pitties which attacked my dog and knocked me down. Luckily I had an umbrella and was able to get up and get away and down the trail. the dogs followed for a while but then returned to the farm. Too bad because was a very enjoyable walk until this. I just hope these two dogs dont really hurt someone....
September 2,2023. Trail is in sad shape in some areas. Sandy and rough. My fat tire bike handled it well but I can see where it could be issue for skinny tires. The scenery outweighs the bad trail. Most problem areas are caused by ATV’s and dirt bikes. Everyone on the trail is courteous and that helps.
Wonderful! the section north of Keene is just great. I admit there are a very few spots that are a little rough or a little wet but for 99% of it, anyone with even limited experience will enjoy it. I would not recommend this trail for a road bike although there are sections that are smooth enough for one. The only part that was a little concerning was near the landfill just north of Keene but that was only 2 tenths of a mile long and if concerned, you could easily walk your bike through that area. But honestly, the entire trail was great with several spots offering spectacular views. The surface is mixed depending on the area, some areas had grass while others were course sand. There were a couple rocky areas but those spots are few and very short.
