McQueen's Island Trail

Fun ride - Experience it before it the river reclaims it.!

March, 2025 by cwbj2wpvp2

Rode it from the entrance gate at Fort Pulaski. First three miles were in great condition. It is hard packed what looks like crushed gravel. Great views on one side of the river, but it runs parallel to the highway a few yards away. The heavy traffic noise detracted some from the experience. After 3 miles it separates from the trail, but in this section it is poorly maintained. There are some parts where it is down to single track. Large sections that are covered in washed over reeds. The tires on our tandem bike sunk in making it like pedaling through loos sand.

Nice trail - parking info needs work

March, 2025 by gchris256

We biked this trail on March 15. Nice trail, but the parking information needs work. We first tried to find the parking at 25 Lyttleton Ave. There is a house there in a neighborhood, but no trail parking. We found the nearby trail crossing at Nicholson St. There is a single-car pulloff next to the crossing. A passing local person said it was okay to park there. Later on the ride we found the other parking listed for the east end of the trail. It is behind a row of shops and is not marked as trail parking as such. There is an alleyway of sorts behind the shops, with parking along the trail. The turn into the alley is beside the Peter and Sons Shoe Repair Shop at 42 Windermere Blvd, Charleston. Hope this helps other users to find the parking.

Really nice trail to ride. We did have some trouble finding the trailhead but other than that, we enjoyed the ride.

Spanish Moss Trail

Well Maintained

Good flat trail that is well maintained. Many cyclists and folks walking pets in the later afternoon. Enjoyed my ride time but giving only a 4 star due to many road crossings that can be dicey depending on time of day even with cross signals.

Nice Ride - woodsy with swamps and the river

November, 2024 by kevievn

We started at McLeod Mill road. Thanks to charlesdove for providing excellent details in his review. The sand/dirt stretch lasted about a mile, and then it became asphalt. It was pretty flat with beautiful views. The street crossings were at non-busy intersections. Very enjoyable.

Spanish Moss Trail

Fairly flat concrete path. Well maintained. Had some things to stop and read about historic buildings that surrounded the path. Great scenery along the way

Trail area under construction

August, 2024 by broggeia202

The signage for the intact part of the trail was below average. The detour section was poorly marked unless you are familiar with the road building project. It will be much nicer when completed, but for now it is best to avoid that area.

First time run

First time running the loop. For the most part trail was well shaded and nice scenery. Three miles of a nice walk or bike ride. Will definitely be making this my running trial for training.
