Ok, so having ridden the length from Sunset Cemetery north to 201 in Bingham here are my recommendations. The path from the Cemetery to Tavern Road you can probably skip. It's considerably rougher and doesn't offer much in the way of views. I would suggest parking at the Jotham and Emma bridge that separates Solon and Embden and picking up the trail via Tavern Road. However there is still a land dispute going on so the trail ends abruptly with fencing and "NO ATVS" signs posted. Now to be clear there are no "No Trespassing" signs, just the ones about ATV's. I asked some locals at 201 motor sports (after leaving the trail where indicated and biking into town via the road) and they didn't seem to think it would be an issue. That being said if you stay on the trail, be prepared to work around construction fencing, game cams and caution tape. I did notice that my bicycle tracks weren't the only ones. This route gives you about 16 miles round and overs a pretty good trail and beautiful views. This is not a cruiser style or road bike route. Some spots are smoother than others- best with a hybrid or mountain bike. Also go mid week and preferably after a recent rain. There will be less dust and less ATV's out and about. Regarding the drivers of said ATV's I found most (and there weren't many) to be polite, cautious, and gave me lots of space. Some however seemed annoyed I was out there. Just like anywhere I suppose.
This is not a bike trail, this is a atv trail, the people drive the side by sides like they are out of cigarettes on the trails up here.
Was a wonderful morning for a bike ride,
We started in Livermore Falls and loved it! However, about 6 miles north, the trail is washed out and collapsed into a ravine. We tried to go around out on Main Street and up Macomber, but Macomber St was also washed out about 1/2 way up the hill and the road was closed. Will have to go South from Farmington next time!
I've done this whole trail and there are two distinctive parts. The western part has many long stretches with a narrow strip of dirt surrounded by grass. It's also not smooth riding.
The eastern part in Gotham has much better parking and the trail itself is a much more comfortable ride. Also, if you leave from Gotham there are some good eateries to go to after.
The trail surface varies over the 20 mile length. Never gets too rough, but it gets close to overgrown in a few areas. There are a few nice wetland areas and some good views. Mostly just a nice trail for a bike ride.
I love walking on the trails, I started walking there a year ago, its helped me to build my strength and lungs from struggling with long covid, its quiet and peaceful, but I'm afraid the allowing of atvs is going to ruin that, ill see how it goes but if the atvs ruin the peaceful surroundings ill be looking for another peaceful place.
Walked this trail for many years and they have fix it up nice
Started at Capitol park entrance enjoying the walkers passing by. All were saying good morning! Great walk paved with asphalt. Follows the Kennebec River. A little disappointed it was by the waste treatment facility.
If you’re going North on 93, don’t go all the way to Exit 40, Route 115. Instead get off at Route 3 East and follow it to Henzel Road as directed. (Note: There is no sign for Henzel Road.) You’ll save about 30 minutes of drive time but miss the quaint village of Bethlehem.
The trail itself is lovely but a little rocky for this 70 year.
