Steamboat Trace Trail

Bugs and beef

September, 2018 by pitsy

My husband and I enjoyed riding half of the Steamboat Trace Trail. We started by Nebraska city and rode to Peru. The first half had lots of shade which was nice since it was surprisingly hot and humid for an early September morning. We had to pedal against some wind when we got to the more open area through the fields, but it wasn't bad, and we were grateful for the wind on the way back since the temp. rose into the 80's. This ride will be most remembered for the large number of grasshoppers and woolly caterpillars found on the trail. We enjoyed seeing lots of monarchs too. Besides bugs, we did come across 2 angus cows and a calf that found their way over or under the fence and onto the trail. I suspected that this could be a possibility since I saw a cow pie on the trail on the way to Peru. I grew up on a farm so I wasn't too concerned and knew they would move out of the way, but thought I would give future bicyclists a heads up. The trail was in good shape for the most part. Every now and then we would encounter a section with rocks instead of crushed limestone so we had to watch where we were going. The only other thing to look out for is a few areas where they put metal poles so vehicles won't drive on the trail include a base for a pole, but no pole is in place.

Wabash Trace Nature Trail

Wabash Trace is a great ride.

This summer I’ve ridden (1) Flint Hills which I didn’t like at all due to large chunks of tire popping flint rock and poor overall condition, (2) Katy Trail twice which I liked a lot, then (3) Wabash Trace from Council Bluffs to Malvern and back. This was my favorite for trail condition, canopy, and the towns of Mineola, Silver City, and Malvern. I’ll repeat this ride several times this summer getting ready for RAGBRAI.

Steamboat Trace Trail

Worth The Effort

Enjoyed the three different views. River, farm and wooded parts of the trail. If only the sun had been out! Only two minor washouts necessitated our dismounting from our tandem. Ten years ago we would have ridden over them, but with age comes wisdom. Do not miss this trail if you are in the area!! We rode it out and back and enjoyed it very much. Pa. Rode CB to Imogene - May 2018

May, 2018 by graced99

Trail from CB to Malvern is great right now. Detour is no big deal - maybe two minutes of dismount and walking. However the trail from Malvern to Imogene when we went was soft - those 13 miles felt like alot longer. However, there was pie in Malvern and that made it better!

Steamboat Trace Trail

Some TLC

September, 2017 by billbrockman

As others have said, this nice trail needs some care. A fallen tree partially blocked one spot and branches lay everywhere. Also, the signs say "closed during firearms hunting season" but don't say when that might be, just a number to call.

Overall though, it's a good trail, not too rough and very peaceful and scenic.

Wabash Trace Nature Trail

Favorite trail

September, 2017 by katzsteel

I really like this trail. It's very well maintained and a pleasure to ride even in hot weather. It's one of the few trails that has a canopy of trees for miles. It is my favorite for a reason. I've been on it a lot this summer and will continue to ride it. I never tire of it. It's that good.

Steamboat Trace Trail

Pretty, but a little rough

September, 2017 by katzsteel

We started the trail in Peru, NE. The trail hasn't been very well maintained and had branches, ruts, and washout all the way down to Brownville. I didn't mind, but my wife thought it was a harsh ride, so beware. We both rode mountain bikes. This is no trail for skinny tires. I enjoyed it as it had some nice scenery but the end was kinda of anti-climactic, so we just turned around and went back. We will probably do the route from Ne City to Peru and see if the trail is in better shape. Note, if you've ever done wabash trace, this is not maintained nearly as well. We met a couple on recumbents, and wondered how they would fair further down the trail. I've uploaded several pics from the visit.

Steamboat Trace Trail

Great scenery

September, 2017 by lochs4

We rode the trail from Brownville to Peru. There were bluffs, trees, the Missouri River and farm fields. It was an enjoyable ride. There were some washed out spots and rough parts but they were manageable. The Peru trailhead has modern bathrooms that were clean. An overall enjoyable ride. The next day we rode from Nebraska City about 6 miles and back. This part of the trail was in better shape but you do have to ride about 1/2 mile on a gravel road to get to the trail. The trailhead does not have a bathroom or water.

Steamboat Trace Trail

Could be nice trail but....

August, 2017 by bnbinns

My wife and I rode this trail recently while in the area. The trail is in desperate need of maintenance and cleanup. Tree branch debris can be found throughout the Trail. This debris wasn't from a recent storm but had obviously been building up over a long period of time. It was apparent the Trail sees few riders as in some areas the grass had completely overgrown the path. We spent a few hours riding the entire trail without encountering a single rider. Would not recommend till conditions improve.

Rolling Hills

Beautiful, shady trail! The bridges are banked, which I think is very cool. We started at Council Bluffs, and went past Silver City, an adorable, tiny town. Tomorrow, I look forward to starting in Shenandoah on the Wabash-Trace, and heading north.

Pickett trail

I rode the part of the trail from Pickett Road to the Noyes parkway by the rec center and back. The ride was very enjoyable and staff at Rec center was very friendly allowed me to get some water and fill my bottles. great section for new riders.
