Minuteman Bikeway

Getting better with maintenance

June, 2017 by jonbower

We had given up on skating the Minuteman in 2015: the root bumps were so big and numerous that we couldn't skate over them anymore. A bunch of repaving, and the situation is much better. We're back!
The Western end in Bedford has been totally repaved, and is fantastic. We had some problems with stones thrown onto the path by mowers, but, the pavement itself was great. The section through Lexington still has some of the old cobblestone street warnings, which are a hazard to skaters. Most of the root bumps have been smoothed and repaved. The trail in Belmont and Arlington is in good shape, and the crossings in Arlington Center have been vastly improved. I just wish that they hadn't included a short brick section that you have to brake on at the first light. To trail designers: bricks prevent braking on skates!
The only real hazards left are in the Cambridge section in Alewife. After you cross under Rt. 2, there are fissures, an old wood bridge, and cobblestones so bumpy you have to step around them. Needs replacement!
Also, the new crossings in Arlington have yellow ADA bump mats at the road crossings. Path designers should know that as a skater slows to cross streets, those bumps can be enough to stop him/her and cause a fall into the street. Please find a better solution!
The takeaway: a busy, but, pleasant and improving trail that is worthwhile again.

Goffstown Rail Trail

A Wonderful Trail

June, 2017 by thogamecalls

Yes, some sand in places, but otherwise, this is a beautiful trail, well maintained, with safe road crossings and an overall very good dirt/cinder surface. The trail appears to end at the School Bus Depot, but if you continue down the road, it reconnects through the woods for a short distance before taking you out onto Main St of Goffstown. Beware, the Chipmunks are fearless!

Bruce Freeman Rail Trail

Biker ALF

June, 2017 by afrechette4

Decided to start biking last year. Did potions of Brice Freeman twice. Loved the ride. Made it to the end of Phase One this year. Love Heart Pond. Well maintained. More of an incline heading in, which is nice when you are tired and riding "down hill" on your way out. Can not wait for the next phase to be done!!!!!

Blackstone River Greenway (RI)

Very nice ride

June, 2017 by albern36

Very nice ride with varied scenery. The only thing I would add to what has already been written is that there isn't much of a canopy of tree cover for much of the ride so on a really sunny day, wear your sun block. Also, the trail continues a bit more after the Lonsdale entrance. It eventually goes on-road and spills you out in a little park near the Cumberland Town Hall. I would skip this section entirely and just end your ride at Lonsdale. The trail is a little narrower towards it's northern terminus as well.

Nashua River Rail Trail

Description of facilities

June, 2017 by jensimoneau

Trailhead not so visible from the road as described. Generous parking on Groton St in Ayer but no restrooms just portable latrines. If you are traveling a distance, there is no place to change.

Dr. Paul Dudley White Bike Path

Nice

June, 2017 by kv.dmitrieva

A pretty nice trail for a few hours. Mostly you're riding near the river so you can see plenty of boats, geese with their sweet kids, nice bridges and great views of Boston. I'm going to use this trail many times more.

North Central Pathway

Mostly paved

June, 2017 by whpetri

I parked where the trail crosses Highway 140 and pedaled north. In about 3 miles the pavement ends at Old Gardener Road. You then have the option to take Old Gardener to Spring to North Ashburnham Roads to pick up the terminus of the next paved segment or if you're feeling adventurous you can cross Old Gardener and continue on the unpaved rail bed. It was full of humps, some mud and some puddles but you end up at an exit crossing Spring Street and a short connector that joins the paved segment that takes you to downtown Winchendon. Frankly the latter route is more interesting than the street connection route. Don't be surprised if you run into an ATV.

Salisbury Point Ghost Trail

Nice, shady trail

June, 2017 by gail_zona

Parked in the middle at Bartlett St (there is space for 3-4 cars) and just walked the eastern 1/3 of the trail. Nice and shady. Crushed stone path. Very tall trees. It felt very majestic walking amongst them. Very peaceful and quiet.

Air Line State Park Trail

Part of upper section of Air Line

May, 2017 by SPanny

We recently rode from Beaver Hill Road to Old Griffin Road, a section North of Willimantic. Frankly this section was fairly rough, with a lot of loose gravel making for slow going...very different from the lower sections south of Willimantic that are largely cinder. Very rural, tree-lined, would be nice in the Fall. I'm not sure what the other North sections are like, I know there are some upgrades in progress in the various towns.

Blackstone River Greenway (MA)

No up keep

May, 2017 by jtsp21

Just walked six miles this morning.the millbury side is worse then the Worcester side..trees and brush are taking over the whole trail. There was straw all over the trail, not good for bikers to slip on.I don't understand why you would lay down asphalt in the woods and then walk away without doing any maintenance.Someone there told me it's between the CD-R and someone else always fighting over who is responsible for the up keep, that should have been thought about beforehand.....it's a nice trail to have but to let it go is a disgrace....next time you go bring your brush cutters

Southern New England Trunkline Trail

A dry weather trail

May, 2017 by greendiant

DO NOT take this trail when the weather has been wet. Large swampy areas on the Franklin end there is a short section of paved & gravel trail very nice. Where it wasn't paved lots of moguls where the railroad ties were All that being said? I will come back this summer and try again. The trail is tree covered and should be nice and cool

Old Eastern Marsh Trail

Beautiful trail.

May, 2017 by gail_zona

Great trail for a stroll. Paved and well kept. Woodland and salt marsh scenery. Lots of birds including Marsh hawks. Well marked along the way. Shady and sunny parts. Easy parking off Rte 1 in Salisbury.
