Blackstone River Greenway (RI)

This trail could not be nicer, I highly recommend for anyone!

Northern Strand Community Trail

A wonderful semi-urban trail

January, 2017 by rfrenkel123

I live in Swampscott and pick up the unimproved trail in Lynn on Western Ave across the street from McCarthy Glass. It's quite passable from there.

Since I use a mountain bike, the unpaved surface isn't an issue and in summer it's cooler than tar. But it would be much smoother if stone dust was used instead of (or in addition to) gravel.

In Saugus, the trail goes through really beautiful tidal marshes along the Saugus River. It's hard to believe you're in a semi-urban area. In fact that is true of the trail all the way down to the paved section starting in Revere.

The smooth paved section extends from just past scenic Rumney Marsh to the current end in Everett, and is a great safe way to travel off road. I'm looking forward to an extension into Boston.

All in all, a great recreational addition and also a great way to get to the bordering communities and from the North Shore to close to Boston. My deep appreciation to all that have worked on making this trail a reality.

East Bay Bike Path

Love this trail, but

December, 2016 by rectrike

When it's crowded the traffic patterns are crazy because RI has this crazy rule about walkers on the the left and bikes on the ride. That would be just perfect if the paths were one-way, which they aren't. So the oncoming walkers are coming at you in your lane if you are biking, and when you are passing you are cycling coming up on walkers from their backsides and some cyclists have to go 25 mph no matter how crowded, and throw into the mix bikers and walkers going in the opposite direction and then to add to the confusion about a 1/3 of the trail users don't follow the rule and you can't really be sure if they do or don't...CHAOS!!

But I love RI bike trails anyway!

Southern New England Trunkline Trail

December 2016 Status Update

December, 2016 by 23rock

The 3-1/2 mile section in Blackstone, Millville, and Uxbridge that the state contractors have been working on is now complete and open. There are parking lots at Blackstone Depot (off of Canal St.), Central St., Millville, and Adams St., Uxbridge. The now complete trail section extends from just south of St. Paul St. in Blackstone to Adams St. (just before Rte. 146A) in Uxbridge. Very nice. The project also includes a playground at Old Mendon St. in Blackstone where the Friendly Market is adjacent for refreshments.

Also, the Route 126 tunnel in Bellingham is now complete and very nice. In November, DCR employees and FBRTC volunteers cleared 0.3 miles of the trail west from Fox Run Road to a gas line crossing in Bellingham. The surface is still rough.

As to the Castle Hill Way situation, DCR owns an trail easement on the mile or so of right of way from Main St. to Farm St. in Blackstone. This easement is on file with the Worcester County registry of deeds. The condo association owns the surface of the western 1/2 mile, the town of Blackstone owns the eastern 1/2 mile. But, the issue with dogs is that some owners do not clean up after their animals. This is also a continuing issue on the stone dust section between Center St. and Lake St. in Bellingham. So folks resent this. If you do not like the negative attitudes, you only have other dog owners to blame.

Now that the new trail is open, a description of how to span the remaining gap is in order.

Going east from the Depot parking area in Blackstone: Go down the entrance driveway to Canal St. Turn right and follow to St. Paul St. Turn left and follow St. Paul St. past the town offices and across the river to the traffic light at Main St. Turn right and follow Main St. to Castle Hill Way just after the CVS store. Turn left and follow Castle Hill Way to where the pavement curves right. Continue straight ahead through gate on to trail.

Going west, at the end of Castle Hill Way, turn right on Main St. and follow to the first traffic light. Turn left on St. Paul St. and follow to just short of the overpass. Turn right on to Canal St. and follow to the parking lot entrance just before the river bridge. Turn left and enter the parking lot with the trail on the far side. Turn right on to the trail.

Washington Secondary Bike Path

A great ride

November, 2016 by rbsorensen

I live in Cranston and have ridden this trail many times. It has some very picturesque areas, in particular, the mills in Warwick, the Coventry Greenway, and the trestle trail. It's length is very good - doing a round trip gives you 38 miles of riding.

People call this the West Bay trail - never heard of the "Washington Secondary Bike Path". Unlike the start of the East Bay trail in Providence, it is easy to park at the start or along the route at either end.

However, there are a few areas that need work. Portions of the trail in West Warwick are in great need of resurfacing (there are a number of large frost heaves), and the Cranston trail needs resurfacing in some areas as well, as it is aging.

SNETT S. Main St., Bellingham to route 122 Blackstone

October, 2016 by phmaddnes

Be advised that the last half-mile from 122 got to the gate is no dogs allowed you will be accosted by many old people if you have your dog with you. I tried to explain that the map shows this as part of the S and E TT trail but they would have no part of it.

As a native Bostonian, I love this trail. I parked for free at Magazine Beach Park, road towards and crossed Weeks Bridge and continued along Soldiers Field Road to the Hatch Shell where I stopped for an iced latte at the Charles River Bistro where a jazz quartet was playing. Such a relaxing take! I returned the same route since most of Memorial Drive's path is under major construction. The activity on the River was amazing!

Blackstone River Greenway (RI)

Well worth your time!

September, 2016 by ricke11

I found this to be a very scenic, well-maintained, and user-friendly bike trail. Varying views and terrain made for a pleasant ride from Lonsdale to Woonsocket & back (a ~24 mi RT). As mentioned below, there is a brief section where sub-pavement roots are prevalent south of Ashton, but otherwise the surface is great. Restroom facilities just south of the northern terminus were open on a Tuesday afternoon (below the soccer fields around the back of the building) - which was a pleasant surprise.

On the return I biked a bit south of the Lonsdale Drive-In parking area, but a passerby mentioned that the trail went on-road, and signage was easy to miss, so I decided to call it a day. More details to help navigate this section would be appreciated.
