Farmington Canal Heritage Trail

Great ride!

May, 2017 by wilsonk9alex

Took my brand new bicycle on its maiden voyage on this trail. It was great fun. Rode for about 3 hours and loved every minute of it. The historic information posted along the trail is nicely done. The fact that there are restrooms at the trail head is fantastic! They really did a nice job with this trail. Highly recommend it for all. Very kid friendly.

May, 2017 by joeleven_tl

Lovely trail in the early spring. Great variety of scenery--fields, wetlands, Amherst College, pine forest. Well maintained, frequent rest areas. Quite lovely.

Great trail, easy ride. Best part is... It's paved the whole way into center of Northampton. If you end in Northampton make your way to Mimmos. Biggest slice of pizza you'll ever eat for a good price. Enjoy and happy riding!

Moosup Valley State Park Trail

Starts off nice

April, 2017 by jimmorrison

This trail starts off with a nice railroad bridge then after crossing the road, continues paved for a short ride, then turns to mush. I followed a side trail (mean for a mountain bike) up the hill to the west side and followed the trail which seems to be muddy in some spots, not paved and in poor shape.

Like everyone else stated, skip that part for now.

Air Line State Park Trail

Airline Trail South

April, 2017 by CW4

Trail Report - The section of the Airline Trail from the dirt parking lot on Route 149 to the Blackledge River is currently under construction, about 1and 1/2 miles. You can ride east but not to the west due the resurfacing work.

New Extension Route 196 in East Hampton to Alden's Crossing (1.6 miles), is about 1/2 done. It has the gravel bedding in place but not the stone dust riding surface. The drainage design is poor and there are 4 large wet areas and erosion spots. It is ride-able but not too scenic or any fun.

Burrillville Bike Path

short but sweet and easy

April, 2017 by adamandtrudi

This trail is easy and perfect for young children or a person who needs a fairly flat, smooth ride. This was my daughter (age 9) first time on a bike trail so it was perfect for teaching her the "rules of the road" and common courtesies when meeting other riders and walkers. As for the ride itself it short. Straight down and back with a short detour to a "duck pond". We plan on returning and walking the path around the pond to see how that is.

North Central Pathway

Nice trail. Not as long as it is billed.

April, 2017 by elizabethconley

On 4/11/17 I parked at the Old Gardner Rd lot and began traveling south. The path was nicely paved and level. Very easy and well marked. There is a sign post marking the Winchendon/Gardner Town Line and even a bike repair station w/an air pump. Lots of benches and places to rest.

When the trail meets back up at Rt. 140 (3.24 miles) you have to cross over Rt. 140. This is when the trail gets a little more rough. Still flat, but unpaved and really wet (some ice still) on this particular day. At about 2000' it goes puts you at an electrical transfer station. You can continue on for another 1/2 mile before you reach Park Street.

You can cross Park St, but you'll only go about 2000' before you reach another electrical transfer station. From there, there is no more path to follow. Not that I could find anyway.

I was hoping it was 11 miles one way. But turned out to be closer to 4-4.5.

There is another trail, which intersects the first rough portion. It brings you into the Perley Brook Reservation Area. It's a lot more rugged and wet. More hils and a lot more challenging. Definitely not suitable for a road bike and almost more appropriate for a fat tire mountain bike, especially if it's wet.

Overall, it was a good experience. I was muddy and sweaty at the end, but it was worth it.

Monadnock Branch Rail-Trail

not a peaceful walking path

March, 2017 by leaton29

From the Jaffrey ball field it was very populated with houses and led us along the busy road. I am sure would be fine for biking or snow mobile, but not a peaceful walk.

Farmington Canal Heritage Trail

Southington-Farmington Construction Updates

December, 2016 by martinip

With the southern section nearly continuous from New Haven to Southington (minus the West Main Street-Cornwall Avenue gap in Cheshire), the next major gap is Plainville and its surroundings. The Curtiss Street-Lazy Lane segment is due to be constructed as part of the SRS Superfund remediation, though it looks like not much has been done yet besides brush-cutting. The small bridge immediately north of Curtiss Street has also been re-decked for trail use. Lazy Lane-West Queen Street is in the early stages of planning as a state project and will bring the trail almost to the end of the active railroad.

Heading north from Plainville, the trail construction from Northwest Drive to Red Oak Hill Road in Farmington is moving right along, with most of the trail already paved. The last major piece here will be the Route 6 bridge, which is due to be installed in 2017.

The active railroad between Birch Street in Southington and Northwest Drive in Plainville will present challenges to resolving the remaining gap, but a study is underway to determine the best possible routing.

Air Line State Park Trail

Construction Update - South

December, 2016 by martinip

Was in East Hampton briefly yesterday - it looks as though work is now underway to extend the trail west from the center of East Hampton to Alden's Crossing. Grading had been done and there were new railings on the footbridge east of Alden's Crossing. The next segment will be from Alden's Crossing to the Portland town line, with Portland also beginning work to build out its portion of the trail.

Wonderful news, the bridge is in going north in Thompson,Ct it is in finally. Now you can walk only over the bridge. Soon in the spring you will be able to ride from Putnam to the Mass line.

Southern New England Trunkline Trail

December 2016 Status Update

December, 2016 by 23rock

The 3-1/2 mile section in Blackstone, Millville, and Uxbridge that the state contractors have been working on is now complete and open. There are parking lots at Blackstone Depot (off of Canal St.), Central St., Millville, and Adams St., Uxbridge. The now complete trail section extends from just south of St. Paul St. in Blackstone to Adams St. (just before Rte. 146A) in Uxbridge. Very nice. The project also includes a playground at Old Mendon St. in Blackstone where the Friendly Market is adjacent for refreshments.

Also, the Route 126 tunnel in Bellingham is now complete and very nice. In November, DCR employees and FBRTC volunteers cleared 0.3 miles of the trail west from Fox Run Road to a gas line crossing in Bellingham. The surface is still rough.

As to the Castle Hill Way situation, DCR owns an trail easement on the mile or so of right of way from Main St. to Farm St. in Blackstone. This easement is on file with the Worcester County registry of deeds. The condo association owns the surface of the western 1/2 mile, the town of Blackstone owns the eastern 1/2 mile. But, the issue with dogs is that some owners do not clean up after their animals. This is also a continuing issue on the stone dust section between Center St. and Lake St. in Bellingham. So folks resent this. If you do not like the negative attitudes, you only have other dog owners to blame.

Now that the new trail is open, a description of how to span the remaining gap is in order.

Going east from the Depot parking area in Blackstone: Go down the entrance driveway to Canal St. Turn right and follow to St. Paul St. Turn left and follow St. Paul St. past the town offices and across the river to the traffic light at Main St. Turn right and follow Main St. to Castle Hill Way just after the CVS store. Turn left and follow Castle Hill Way to where the pavement curves right. Continue straight ahead through gate on to trail.

Going west, at the end of Castle Hill Way, turn right on Main St. and follow to the first traffic light. Turn left on St. Paul St. and follow to just short of the overpass. Turn right on to Canal St. and follow to the parking lot entrance just before the river bridge. Turn left and enter the parking lot with the trail on the far side. Turn right on to the trail.
