BWI Trail

pleasantly surprised

February, 2024 by chrisneilbelles

I enjoyed this loop trail more than I thought I would! Pavement is in generally good shape --- maybe not a solid A but definitely a good B. Most of it is alongside a highway or busy road as one might expect with an "airport loop", but there are a variety of other environments too --- woods, open fields, even a horse farm. By far the gem of the trail for me is along the northern section where you get a wonderful view of the entire airport from an elevated, open area. Very cool! Without mountain scenery or a river to work with, I think the trail designers did a pretty good job. And this loop forms a hub from which you can get to other Baltimore trails -- Patapsco Valley to the NW, Baltimore and Annapolis Rail Trail to the SE, and Rt 170 bike lane into Baltimore city to the north. In sum, the BWI airport loop is definitely worth a ride if you are in the mood for something unique and little different.

Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail (VA)

can’t even find parking

The map gave us the start of the trail. But, it was in a neighborhood and there was no parking at all.

Arlington Loop

A good ride then & probably better now

February, 2024 by davesnyder1622

I enjoyed this loop in 2016 or so and just learned it has a name. Nice mix of environments with plenty of available lunch or coffee stops and scenic waterfront, linear greenway and wooded areas. Some spots were challenging, even dicey then, and I would expect they’ve been improved if this is a designated path.

Its train inspired playground is a fan favorite in my family. It also has a nice 9 hole frisbee golf course. It has a bathroom.

Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail

nice easy walk with good views.

Trail requires a short walk through a parking lot to reach the boardwalk trail head. TrailLink said parking was available in the neighboring neighborhoods of richfield station and bayview hills, this is incorrect. We couldn't find any parking in richfield station and bayview hills was marked with multiple private property no trespassing signs as well as painted reserved spots for residents, and is clearly a private community not set up for trail parking. We went on the towns website and found parking as described behind kellams field adjacent to the water park. The trail is well maintained and easy to walk as there is very little elevation change. It is a nice amenity but isn't a day hike or time consuming activity, nice for a quick easy walk with some nice views. There was one loose dog someone felt they didn't need to have leashed, and some fast moving bicycle traffic that was quite close on the boardwalk section. The bicycles may or may not warn you of their impending passing so be aware.. The water views are nice and offer some good photo ops for birds.

Trolley Line #9 Trail

Awesome Trail

December, 2023 by jandre

This trail has everything except length. Great scenery, smooth surface, friendly vibe, and quirky, historic Ellicott City with a wide selection of shops and restaurants. The trolley right of way has a decent grade, ensuring a good workout going uphill. This has my vote for the RTC trail Hall of Fame.

Mount Vernon Trail

Mt Vernon Trail

Rode from Mt Vernon toward DC , 16 miles out and back with temps in high 40s in mid December, midweek. Love this trail! Beautiful views of Potomac; nice variety of flat and hilly terrain through urban and forested areas. Impressed by “bike patrol” checking in on my stop. 4 star review due to tree root bumps (mostly marked), and close proximity to Memorial High ( constant humming of cars passing).

Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail

Bumpy!

December, 2023 by zx8q54srfm

As others have said - this trail is very bumpy. Much of the trail still has railroad ties going across it. I did on a touring bike and even deflated the tires partway into the trail. I still called it after 8 miles. Just not much fun. Hope they will improve it a bit sometime because I lived the countryside and overhanging tree branches etc. Really beautiful. Good walking trail or mountain bikes.

Checked it out while we were in the area, and it was nice! Wide/paved walkway. Wasn’t crowded or desolate. Decent amount of activity. Beautiful streams and scenery. Highly recommend!

I started my experience at the trailhead of the charming and historic town of Purcellville at 7:30 on a Saturday morning in late October. I only went about six miles, but was surprised at the amount of fitness minded people using the trail so early in the day. It was primarily walkers and runners, but every now and then serious speed demons on their bikes would race past me. It's certainly a good trail for building up speed.

As for me, a tourist from California, I was moving along the trail moderately so as to take advantage of as many photo ops as possible. I especially enjoyed the fall colors, rolling hills of farm and pasture land, and some historic, vintage buildings. The stately country homes were absolutely stunning! I wish I'd had more time to explore more of this trail further!

Great Ride with my brother to raise awareness and support homeless veterans

October, 2023 by ragman_tl

The trail is great starting at Cumberland. Pretty smooth and scenic. Not very far in there were quite a few detours as the trail was damaged in many places. I wish there had been more amenities along the trail. The last 40 miles into DC were surprisingly bad, with muddy rough conditions and detours. The trip was memorable and challenging and we were proud to raise money for theplummerhome.org for homeless veterans.
