We had a really nice ride...had the trail to ourselves (on a Thursday). We parked at the Welcome center and rode from there. Enjoy!!

Southern Tip Bike & Hike Trail

Inline skating

June, 2023 by jreungoat

Nice trail for inline skating, the asphalt is smooth and it's flat and straight. Nothing really scenic about it but even though it's along the road, you don't see it much as it's separated by a few feet of bushes/trees. Parts in the sun, parts in shade alternate. I wished they extended it north.

413 Rail to Trail

Great for biking

May, 2023 by sbabym

We did four miles yesterday and only saw four other bikers. Great flat path the shrubs and small trees along the path are beautiful but in some areas we had to go around because branches are growing over the path so if this isn’t maintained Mother Nature will take over and the path will be unusable and I would hate to see that happen! I don’t want to have to carry a machetes with me next time

413 Rail Trail

My husband and I rode this trail and loved it. It's a flat and easy enjoyable ride. Very nice and clean parking areas at both ends. The trail did have some pine cones and branches that could be cleared. It may be in future plans as they expand; a port o potty would be useful. Overall kudos to those responsible for this trail.

Assateague Island Bike Path

Great Ride

October, 2021 by beachbum25

I have ridden this Trail many times as I live on the Maryland Shore & Go to Assateague often, I never added it here as it isn't a True Rail Trail but noticed someone had so I'll put my $.02 in. Very Flat, only hill is the Bridge over the Bay. Can be quite windy so I usually Park at Visitor Center & Ride south first as this is generally into the wind, but be sure to check the Flag when you get there as it does sometimes turn abound. Horses may be seen anywhere on the Island....you will see plenty of Horse Droppings! There are 2 Bayside Access roads which are worth a visit, there is also a Bike Trail in the State Park Campground Area that is easy to get to. It ends at a gravel Parking lot near a Construction access gate Midway down Bayberry Drive, so you can get from one Trail to the other & add some variety to your ride. No Ocean Views from the Trail but there are plenty of spots where you can stop in The National Park Campground Loops & walk up over the Dunes. Trail Ends at OSV Zone, which requires a Permit. I often Bring My Jeep & make a Day of it here, but it gets VERY Crowded on Summer Weekends. You can always Bike in even when there are Massive Summer Backups on the Road. Easy to get 10 - 15 miles in here if you get Creative.

Assateague Island Bike Path

nice bike ride

Always a breeze, crossing the bridge is the best view of OC. Saw 4 wild ponies grazing, on my ride, right on the bike path… deer were all around as well. Wish it was longer ride and went by the beach !!!

413

We rode this 7/3/21 late morning and saw 5 other bikes and a few walking. Flat, straight, fun . Trail ends just before Crisfield and further down 413 there are bike lanes in town.

Southern Tip Bike & Hike Trail

Amazing

October, 2020 by loriperron5960

We bike this last week and found that even though it is next to the main highway the trees make it feel woodsy. We loved the bike fixing stations on each end of the trail. The 10 miles round trip was well worth

Assateague Island Bike Path

Nice Flat Ride

October, 2020 by ringogarcia1972

We just took a crisp mid-October ride and it was very doable, flat, and easy. The bridge over had a great view of Ocean City. Only downside is you may ride along backup of cars getting into park. On the horses, its good to manage your expectations. You definitely know they are there because there are plenty of horse pies on the trail that you may need to dodge. We actually did see one after going off a side trail. One frustrated woman yelled out to the Park Ranger asking where the horses were. Answer: “They are wild mam! I cant tell you where they are at any given time.” ¿¿

Southern Tip Bike & Hike Trail

fun, easy first trail

July, 2020 by laurascag

This was my first bike ride on a trail with my husband and small dog (flipped into a basket) and it was perfect. All paved, almost completely flat. It’s actually 10 miles out and back if you do the whole trail. It was a hot day, but a lot of the trail was shaded.

Southern Tip Bike & Hike Trail

Keep extending northward!

June, 2020 by trailsforall

I biked the trail round trip end to end from southern trailhead (milepost 0.0) to Phase II northern terminus at Capeville Road (milepost 4.9) on a humid Saturday morning in June 2020. Although currently just shy of 5 miles one way - there is HUGE potential for Virginia's Eastern Shore if Phase III and Phase IV are built connecting to Cape Charles waterfront. Even more ambitious, VDOT is studying an Eastern Shore Rail to Trail project, extending an additional 49 miles from Cape Charles to Hallwood, Virginia.

As of June 2020, the 4.9 mile long trail provides a smooth and flat trip along a 10 foot wide asphalt surface. Wildflowers, shrubs, trees, agricultural fields and a few remnant Cape Charles Railroad industrial buildings line the route. the southern 2.5 miles (Phase I, opened in 2011) provides benches, repair stations, interpretive signs, parking and restrooms. The northern half (Phase II) has fewer amenities, but continues the smooth surface.

Being a regular driver along the adjacent US 13 (four lane 55 mph highway) I was surprised to find that the trail is about 50% in shade, with trees along both sides of the route and a thin canopy overhead. The other 1/2 of the trail is more open to the east, yet trees and shrubs are nearly continuous on the western side of the trail. This thin stand of pine and hardwood trees provides a visual buffer from the highway, but the noise of passing 18-wheel trucks is always present. If you're seeking an escape deep into natural solitude, this may not be the trail for you. However, the condition of the trail is superb. Additionally, crossing US13 near the southern terminus (be careful!) provides connections to Kiptopeke State Park and more (unpaved) trails. Overall, I remain hopeful that with expansion northward, the trail reaches greater potential. Currently, it still provides a great, albeit short experience. Come on, Eastern Shore, "build it, and they will come"!
