New River Trail State Park

Really liked this trail

July, 2021 by tfhutton

After doing the Virginia Creeper, this was next on my list. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was very impressed. The campground at Foster Falls was a perfect place to stay, with the visitor center and camp store nearby, and the cliffs of the New River rising up to proved a stunning backdrop. Trail itself was well maintained, with good signage, ample rest spots and toilets. Shot Tower makes for a very interesting stop along the way. Looking back at the pictures reminded me of what a nice ride this was.

Tough Ride, But Worth It

June, 2021 by rwest3

We set out on our gravel bikes from Abington and rode to Whitetop and back. We are avid road cyclists and I’ve got to admit that the stretch from Damascus to Whitetop was no joke. It was a slow, steady grind to Whitetop. We should have brought more fluid. Each of us brought two bottles and we burned through those quickly. We were able to stop for Gatorade and cold water on the way back at the Bike Exchange in Damascus. There was nothing open in Whitetop on the day we rode.

Basically a gravel road, torn up by horses and tractor tires. Wont be back.

Huckleberry Trail

the hills make for good coasting

May, 2021 by tom.joy

Parked at the Rec center and biked to the Gateway parking area - 11 miles one way. On the return, we took the trail headed into Blacksburg for a short distance - first trail I’ve seen with roundabouts. Yes, it is hilly - but it adds the opportunity for some good downhill coasting ! The mileage markers are interesting/inconsistent between sections. There are cement ones, road sign types, and sometimes it wasn’t super obvious which way the trail went. Trail Link kept us on the trail!

All I can say is Wow!

April, 2021 by julie222

We rode from Damascus up to Whitetop snd back down again. The trip up is strenuous and well worth the effort. There are bike shops in town that will take you up so you can ride down as well which will be the beat best for some folks. The pristine natural forest, bridges and streams have a beauty that can’t be seen off trail. The ride is so pleasant and the day was amazing. The trail isn’t super wide and it is in great shape. There is some loose gravel here and there so you want to use caution and good sense.

Riverway Trail (Radford)

Paved Riverside Trail for Walking and Biking in Radford, VA

April, 2021 by scottmann2020

A beautiful 3+ mile paved trail along the New River for walkers and bikers. This trail is in the City or Radford but it feels like you are in the countryside. Don't miss the section that turns away from the river towards "Connellys run" - a small stream that runs to the New. This section runs through a small valley with wild flowers, forest trees and plants all around and includes an arched railroad underpass, a tunnel under Lee Highway and 3 small cool wooden bridges that cross the stream. There are unpaved side trails off the paved trial that are available to explore the mountainside. Nice restaurants for food & drink and hotels nearby.

Lives up to the hype

My wife and I rode a good portion of the trail in early spring. Although we rode the more difficult direction from west to east, the views along the way were outstanding. We will definitely be back!

The linear park in southwest Virginia with 57.7 miles of beautiful natural scenery, provides a wonderful biking experience! In our opinion, the New River Trail is one of the top rail trails we have ridden in the U.S. We did a YouTube video of our ride that you can find on our channel, Bent on Bike Trails.

The Huckleberry Trail is the result of a partnership between Christiansburg, Blacksburg and Montgomery County that provides a beautiful paved greenway for bikers, runners and walkers. Note...it is not a rail trail, there are hills! We did a YouTube video of our ride that you can find on our channel, Bent on Bike Trails.

Virginia Creeper Trail

The “Creeper” is a nationally recognized rail trail in southwest Virginia. People of all riding abilities can ride parts of this trail; it’s downhill from Whitetop to Damascus and you can get a shuttle to the top of the mountain! There are 46 bridges or trestles along this 34 mile pastoral ride between Whitetop and Abingdon, Virginia. Definitely worth a visit. We did a YouTube video of our ride that you can find on our channel, Bent on Bike Trails.
