This was my first time running on the capital crescent trail and It was stunning! The views are incredible! You can even see the Washington monument a bit further down Capital Crescent after passing Fletchers Cove. I am looking forward to doing this trail again! The trail is flat which is nice and easy to run on, completely flat and paved .
Rode this trail Friday October 4 took canal towpath west until the second bridge connection and continued until the pave trail ended. Towpath was nice and dry but rough ( should have worn gloves ) Went back on paved Western Maryland Rail Trail. There were 2 gigantic parking lots which had no cars not sure if they are necessary but nice. The trail has grown longer since the last time I was here.
First time at this trail. Went to Purcellville Saturday October 5 after riding Brunswick to Harpers Ferry. Lots of parking even for the big minivan. Heading East out of town the trail is smooth and flat following the power line right of way. Total ride was around 40 miles seemed easier going East. Many rest areas and food stops along my ride. Kind of cool but nice weather. Also 90 percent of the cars stopped to let me cross at the many intersections. Not used to this and strange ( I am from Ohio )
A gorgeous day for a ride, with a bit of a snag early on. One leg of the trail (Arthur Ross to Rte 225, about 2 miles from the Indian Head trailhead) is closed due to asphalt maintenance. They expect to open again by tomorrow. You can work around the closure riding through the neighborhood streets that parallel the trail.
Aside from that one unexpected detour, a beautiful ride on a flat, well marked and maintained trail.
I use the trail in the Vienna area and am elderly and love to use the trail walking to exercise. There are some longer parts where there are no facilities (benches) to stop and rest. Could more benches be added please to aid those of us (the elderly) who love to walk the trail but are limited because we need to stop and rest more often. Thank you.
A well-maintainrd and beautiful bike ride in a large metropolitan area.
Rode this trail on weekday. Very little traffic on the trail. Great paved surface. Pleasant countryside to ride through. Wonderful lunch and coffee at Clarity Coffee House in Indian Head.
Parked at route 224, rode to White Plains first then back to Indian Head for lunch. Final three miles back to the car afterwards.
We rode from Welcome center to the Laurel Grove / Baggett Park trail head. 17.5 mile round trip. Nice ride, some nice sights and some shade. Not crowded. Would recommend and will do it again.
The Franconia area has demarcated bike lanes along quite a few roads, this needs to be extended with safety in mind. Namely a physical concrete sidewalk every 5 meters would increase safety for cyclists from cars and create a physical barrier limiting car intrusion into bike lanes and accidents more prominent signs at intersections warning road users to exercise patience and look out for bike users would also help greatly.
Started at the north end and got ½ mile in before turning around. Large cobble stones, slick mud, large rocks, stair steps to bridge crossings and rocky water crossings are BAD news for road tires! Nobby mountain or gravel tires will have no problems. Don’t try without the right tired unless you want to ruin your bike crashing.
Rode it today on the last day of August under beautiful blue sky for the first time. I was delighted by this trail. It's well-kept and I really can't add any more than what others have written: party shaded, ride thru woods, wetlands and two spots of farmland. I started riding this Saturday morning, the Labor Day weekend, at 9:40 a.m. I expected the Village Green Park parking lot to be chock-full of people on such a great day and for a three-day weekend. Nope. There were about five other cars, with barely anyone around. While there were usually people in sight on the trail, it was not crowded at all, which made for a great ride if volume of trail traffic is a concern of yours. I think the signage is horrible if you start from the Village Green parking lot. There actually was one other person at the lot when I arrived who kindly offered to let me trail him as he biked to the trailhead. The web site for Chas. Co. Parks says to follow the signs from the park to the trail, but I saw none whatsoever. You bike to just in front of the naval air station entrance and take a left for a short ride up the street and the trailhead is on your left. I give it five stars b/c the scenery was varied and enjoyable; the trail is well-kept; and trail traffic is light.
An urban trail - I encountered enough issues that only the Georgetown stretch along the Potomac River before climbing away from the river would bring me back. Use the C&O trail. Same trailhead, MUCH BETTER experience. The parking area/situation in Georgetown is bad. There’s a much better parking lot up river (away from Georgetown) at Fletcher’s Cove that is accessed from Canal Road NW. If the the upper lots are full, take the tunnel downhill which will take you to a very casual parking area by the river that moves at a much slower pace with plenty of spots to park and places to relax. The Bethesda to Silver Springs stretch is extremely urban and riders will compete with busy traffic, bad signage, several dismounted crossings, unmarked detours, and bad signage (that’s worth repeating). The end of the trail, like many stretches of the detoured route, isn’t marked at all. There’s no trailhead in Silver Springs and no off-street parking if you wanted to take a one way trip. The stretch running along the Potomac and C&O trail however is very nice and rates a higher score; I’d give it a 4. BUT, I recommend bringing your patience. I encountered quite a few people who had no clue about trail etiquette and I encountered clots of people standing on the trail chatting, bikes parked & blocking the trail surface, etc.
