This well, groomed trail wonders beautifully right along the Creek side with some areas of easy creek access. Quite a beautiful trail!
I’d give this greenway 4/5 stars. Parts have been re-paved but there are still some areas of broken asphalt and pot holes. If you start from the Asheville side, it is a steep ride down. Think more than Virginia Creeper Trail plus. The parking area is very limited to off the shoulder gravel. The Old Fort side has a less clearly marked parking near a church and is a very steep incline the entire way up. There are several nice benches with beautiful views along the way. There are areas washed out likely due to Helene so vigilance always near the shoulders. I’d recommend as long as you realize what you are facing.
Road 10 miles of this trail from the Gilky trailhead down into Forest City. Thoroughly enjoyed it – what a well done project especially the upper half where you can ride for miles without stopping. It was a cool overcast Sunday afternoon so not many people out and about, but frequent benches and areas to rest, especially in the lower half. Would highly recommend.
Very nice paved railway with several different places to enter / exit. Lots of walkers, joggers and bikers with families and dogs. Unfortunately several parts are still closed off due to the damage from Hurricane Helene flooding with repairs underway. Would still highly recommend!
FYI as of 9/28/26 the green cove parking lot is closed. We were vacationing and followed the information provided on the app which was unfortunately incorrect. We found the parking lot in Damascus that was open and rode to Abingdon and back. My husband wasn’t ready for the incline of the ride but made it, despite cramping up and being grumpy. I thought it was a pretty nice ride.
Yesterday we took our first official ride on our newly purchased Velotric bikes! We rode a total of 32 miles from Abingdon, Va to Damascus, Va and back! The trail was very well maintained! We felt at ease the entire way with the trail conditions. There are many beautiful sites on this trail as you experience farmland, alpacas, cattle, river and streams, and mountain views! Such a beautiful ride! We met some awesome people along the way also! We discussed our bikes, the trail, other trails, etc! We also enjoyed some fabulous food and service! In Damascus, I highly recommend The Cottage Cafe! This is a quaint Irish Pub! The owners, staff, food and beverage are AWESOME! Same goes for 128 Pecan in Abingdon, where we enjoyed a WONDERFUL dinner!
Rented bikes locally in Damascus from Blue Blaze. The ride was beyond our expectations. Rolling countryside through farms was breathtaking. Will return once other half of trail has had repairs completed. Highly recommend!
We visited Biltmore yesterday, stayed the night in Asheville, then drove nearly an hour to this trail and glad we did. The trail is well maintained with clear markings. Only a few small areas were raised or bumpy and those were clearly marked with bright red spray paint. We wish all paved trails were in this good of condition! Rene’ and Greg
Absolutely beautiful ride! Loved all the long wooden trestle bridges and the gorgeous views. Trail was in excellent condition. I’ve ridden many trails throughout the USA and this one is definitely top 10. The only bummer was that the other 20 miles of the trail are still closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene. As soon as that section is repaired I’m definitely coming back to ride from White Mountain to Damascus.
