Outside of Ashland, the tarmac ends. Some mud due to recent rains, but nothing the all terrain tires couldn’t handle. Washboard at the intersections. No other cyclists encountered. Just side by side ATVs, but actually light traffic mid week. I’d do it again.
The reroute of this trail is ridiculous & dangerous: you walk along a county road, not to mention misleading for visitors (like us). We saw another couple & a family just as bewildered as us. Smells fishy
We started at the trail head in Bayfield where there is parking and a bathroom. Within minutes, bikes were detoured to highway 13 (a busy highway). We took city streets back to our car since we didn’t know how long the detour on highway 13 was going to be. The description of the trail sounded great. Maybe starting on the south end would have been better?
We rode the entire trail beginning at the train depot in Ironwood to Ramsay and then back to Ironwood. There are bathrooms and parking in Ironwood and a portable toilet in Bessemer. The entire trail is paved and very smooth. From Ironwood to Bessemer the trail is quite flat. After Bessemer and into Ramsay (about 7.5 mile mark) the trail gets hilly. The hills were manageable in low gear for my 60+ age. Use caution at the few street crossings; the cars do not give the bikes the right of way. Overall, it was a great ride.
Biked Ironwwod to Ramsey on this sweet PAVED trail teeming with wild flowers. At mile 3.5 it leaves Hwy 2 and becomes completely wooden. Saw a deer and beaver dam. Loved reading the historic signs.
A plus of the trail is that is stays dry unless there are heavy rains. Lots of towns for food, gas, etc. However, it is "washboardy" and the gravel is loose in many areas. From a Motorcycle perspective, it is not much fun. I understand most railroad trails are straight and level, so if it's not "challenging" with some curves and hills, then they could at least get some gravel, a grader and roller out there and maintain it better!
We rode this trail from the Hurley trail head, very nice (and well maintained) black topped trail, mostly flat with interesting signs about the area’s history and some original railroad bridges. Some of the street transitions are rough and you don’t have the right of way so be careful when crossing the roads (there are stop signs to let you know). The trail runs parallel to the ATV trail and there are caution signs for crossing areas for them also. Very nice ride-would recommend.
We completed the 9.5 mile ride to Ramsey and returned back to Ironwood on July 22. It was a very pleasant ride through woods, wildflowers and small communities. Use caution at the road cossings and don't expect drivers to stop for you!
This trail is in excellent condition. So smooth and pretty shady for a summer ride. ATVs ride a trail beside and shared it for a few short paved sections. It’s up and down all the way to Ramsay. Plenty of benches, picnic tables and repair stations along the way. Lots of wildlife. We rode 4th of July weekend, pretty light traffic. Highly recommend!
This is a very well maintained trail. Camp grounds in Ojibwa Park and Loretta are excellent. Parking also available in Winter at the Winter Depot Welcome Center as well as Chamber glossy magazines from all regional Chambers of Commerce. Log onto friendsoftuscobiatrail.com for a directory of all services along the trail. Oral History on computer at Depot Welcome Center of historic railroading, logging and settling from early pioneers. Elk reintroduction and muskie interpretive displays with oral descriptions also available. Open Wed through Sat, 10 AM to 3 PM plus Mon and Tues based on staff availability..
