Root River State Trail

Root River Trail was a great ride.

September, 2026 by diboy89

We rode Lanesboro to Fountain with a detour to Preston on the return. Trail was well maintained and scenery is incredible. The Root river is next to the trail most of the way. Caution. The last five miles to Fountain is uphill. The Preston trail needs some work. Blacktop is rough and you can tell not as maintained as the Root River. We rode out and back, Lanesboro to Rushford the next day. That asphalt is some of the best we have ridden. Appears to be new. Scenery is also awesome. Highly recommend if you are looking for a weekend away.

Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail

Lovely

September, 2026 by the_masseuse

As other reviews state, this side isn’t as nice and maintained as its counter part. There’s a small section in the middle that gets narrow and some grass clumps have grown in the midst of the asphalt. BUT from Harmony a few miles out it is brand new, and the views are worth it! Hilly as hell! But also fun. Best part is camping at the Hidden Valley campground. This part of the river is ice cold!!

Root River State Trail

Most is good.

August, 2026 by tgain

Just rode this trail. The section between Rushford and Lanesboro is great. From Lanesboro to Fountain there are dangerous slick spots and weed overgrown onto the trail. The fountain trail head is full of dangerous wild parsnip weed. This trailhead has not been maintained. Also the section between Rushford and Houston is in terrible condition with slick sections of moss and mud and crumbling asphalt. Decided to take hwy 16 back to Rushford.

Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail

What a Shame!

August, 2026 by tgain

This section of trail is in terrible shape and in dire need of repaving. There are mud and moss covered areas that are almost impassable as well as cracks, holes and crumbling asphalt. This trail is dangerous especially for road bikes. What a shame they have let this go for so long for a state trail since the scenery is so beautiful!

Old Highway 131 Trail

narrow and dangerous

August, 2026 by daveandlorig

I read the reviews and was so looking forward to this trail but I’m wondering if we took the wrong route. There were a group of women horseback riding and the trail had lots of horse poop was also narrow and winding and had tree roots that made it difficult and dangerous especially on the ridges. We turned back after about 20 min

Great River State Trail

Bridge Out - Can’t recommend until it’s replaced

July, 2026 by thomasapplegate

Unfortunately what is otherwise a nice, flat, double track trail is interrupted at about halfway heading north. The bridge that burned is in the middle of a marshy lake so it seems there is no good detour. I’ll be back when they replace the bridge.

Buffalo River State Trail

Not a bike friendly trail

July, 2026 by cbissett_tl

This trail is NOT for biking—the surface is largely sand and full of ruts and where there is “gravel” it is more like large rocks that cannot easily be ridden on. We will not ride this trail again. It seems to be for ATV’s and not bikers, unfortunately.

Root River Trail June 2026

Great trail! Wide and open, great views of the river. A must do trail!

Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail

nice trail

June, 2026 by cabin6700

We stayed in Preston overnight and the rode 6.7 miles of this trial to access the Root River trail and then east to Peterson and back for a 50 mile ride. While not as wide and well maintained as the root river trial this is still a nice shady trail with pleasant river views and Preston is a good Lodging option for the root river trail. Stayed at the Jailhouse Inn. The owners are very welcoming and the breakfast is top notch.

Root River State Trail

great trail

A great easy cruising trail. Wider than most and well maintained. Lots of shade but you can still get views of farms, hills, and the river.
