New River Trail State Park

Beautiful Fall Riding

October, 2020 by dsmyers1969

We rode the trail from Galax to Pulaski and back in 3 days. The trail is very beautiful flat on the Galax end and slight inclines on the Pulaski side. The gravel surface was in good shape and the restrooms are well maintained. My favorite section was the Fries spur. D Myers

Potts Valley Rail Trail

Potts Trail

Rode this on 10/5/20 with friends. Mountain bike a must. Trail in poor condition. Numerous fallen trees, long grass, and muddy patches on this short old elevated rail track through the woods. With a little maintenance this could be spectacular.

Lick Run Greenway

lovely

More signage would have been nice but getting a bit lost was all part of the fun. It’s ALOT of uphill if you start downtown. I started at Valley View... parked near Best Buy. We took two cars to avoid the uphills on the return. Just beautiful!

Beautiful biking trail!

September, 2020 by jsarinana81

My husband and I took a mini vacay to this area to bike this trail. It was truly gorgeous. We started in Galax and biked 17 miles in and then turned back around. On the way back, it is an uphill climb. Keep that in mind if you have kids with you, or you’re new to biking. On this route you will go through a tunnel and over a bridge, see numerous waterfalls, rapids, and the dam. It was a remote but very well maintained trail. Would definitely love to go back to bike some of the other areas of it!

Two Great Days on the Trail

August, 2020 by sandymo

We rode from Pulaski to Galax the first day and back the 2nd day. It’s a great trail. It does have a lot of double track so probably not the best for pulling a trailer or riding a trike unless you pick the specific areas without double track or don’t mind the rough ride. I highly recommend the Jackson Park Inn on the Pulaski end and The Doctors Inn on the Galax end. Also, don’t miss the Creek Bottom Brewery in Pulaski. The owner at the Pulaski Bike shop is also amazing and will take your call if you call the phone number posted on the door. I wouldn’t recommend smaller than 32mm tires but certainly saw many road bikes on the trail. Must better experience with bigger tires. We were on 29x2.35 tires on our tandem. Enjoy the ride!

Gorgeous, remote yet well maintained trail

Whenever your taking the family on a trip to a place no one you know has experienced, it is a bit nerve wracking. New River exceeded any expectations we had. The Mill Race campground at Foster Falls is a total gem, with a really fun section of rapids that you can tube down. The campground is well supported by a camp store (which rents bikes and water craft). While the whole trail is really picturesque, the section from Galax to Fries Junction (along Chestnut Creek) is really stunning. Tons of cute bridges and great places to take a dip. The one thing to note is that the trail is remote. There are no towns along the way so you do need to pack your food and water for the day. I would highly recommend this trail to cyclists of all experience level, provided they packed enough food and water for the day.

River bridge closed

Great trail with lots of scenery and very clean and no potholes. Altho the bridge over the river on the north end is closed due to vandalism.

Roanoke River Greenway

A terrific, safe trail right through a city

June, 2020 by ockham3

I ride the Roanoke River Greenway several times a week. I park at either the Norwich trailhead At Bridge Street or the 13th Street entrance. To add the Tinker Creek Greenway, I park at one of two side by side lots on Wise Avenue or at Fallon Park. This section has a very steep hill which connects to the Roanoke River Greenway at the Water Pollution Plant. Great fun. A nice side trip is to cross over to the Garden City Greenway, a two mile climb up and back 2 miles to the RRG. An 18-20 mile excursion in total. Did it this morning. Great!
The ride through the several city parks is quite beautiful and on the weekends there are lots of riders, joggers and walkers sharing the trail with families using the many picnic tables along the route.
I’m always safe, always within shouting distance of help if I need it at 75 years.
