Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail

Easy trail for walking and casual running

May, 2021 by rlk_tl

While not long, this trail makes for a nice 4-mile run if you add the dead-end street past the North Trail Head parking lot. For even a longer, more challenging run, you can follow the signs to Hinchee Trail at the North End. That trail goes up for 2 miles until it reaches Carvin's Cove

My daughters and I like the surface of the Battlefield Trail, and it is great for a recovery run or a short tempo run. There are a couple of running groups that start at the Brewery parking lot: one at 4:15 am on Wednesday mornings and another at 5:45 pm Tuesday afternoons.

This is also a great trail for walking, especially for families to enjoy together and even biking for children.

Huckleberry Trail

the hills make for good coasting

May, 2021 by tom.joy

Parked at the Rec center and biked to the Gateway parking area - 11 miles one way. On the return, we took the trail headed into Blacksburg for a short distance - first trail I’ve seen with roundabouts. Yes, it is hilly - but it adds the opportunity for some good downhill coasting ! The mileage markers are interesting/inconsistent between sections. There are cement ones, road sign types, and sometimes it wasn’t super obvious which way the trail went. Trail Link kept us on the trail!

Paved Riverside Trail for Walking and Biking in Radford, VA

April, 2021 by scottmann2020

A beautiful 3+ mile paved trail along the New River for walkers and bikers. This trail is in the City or Radford but it feels like you are in the countryside. Don't miss the section that turns away from the river towards "Connellys run" - a small stream that runs to the New. This section runs through a small valley with wild flowers, forest trees and plants all around and includes an arched railroad underpass, a tunnel under Lee Highway and 3 small cool wooden bridges that cross the stream. There are unpaved side trails off the paved trial that are available to explore the mountainside. Nice restaurants for food & drink and hotels nearby.

Jackson River Scenic Trail

Well Maintained trail near a lovely river

March, 2021 by kennethrwettig

From Start point (Allegheny outfitters) to Smith Bridge (16 miles round trip???). This trail is well maintained, and though the portion we did, does not really ride along the river the entire time, the river is indeed very pretty. There was not a ton of wildlife or distinct features, but we did find a very cool old abandoned bridge to explore. Look promising for kayaking etc.

Lick Run Greenway

A beautiful greenway.

Lick Run is my favorite among all the Roanoke Greenway, but it is a bit short for a biker. Nice hill climb though. I usually begin at Wiley Drive on the Roanoke River Greenway and ride to Norwich then to Black Dog Salvage and on down 10 Street to 460. There is no bike trail on Orange Avenue, but there is unused sidewalk alongside the heavy traffic. Then to Lick Run and to the Mall!

Pastoral 7 mile rail trail bike ride along the Maury River from Lexington to Buena Vista, Virginia. Here’s your chance to “Ride with the Cows! “ We hope the washed out bridge can be replaced soon so the trail segments are reconnected. We did a YouTube video of our ride that you can find on our channel, Bent on Bike Trails.

This trail is in Covington, Virginia. The word “Scenic” in its name is a perfect description! A delightful, well maintained rail trail; don’t miss riding this trail! We did a YouTube video of our ride that you can find on our channel, Bent on Bike Trails.

The linear park in southwest Virginia with 57.7 miles of beautiful natural scenery, provides a wonderful biking experience! In our opinion, the New River Trail is one of the top rail trails we have ridden in the U.S. We did a YouTube video of our ride that you can find on our channel, Bent on Bike Trails.

The Huckleberry Trail is the result of a partnership between Christiansburg, Blacksburg and Montgomery County that provides a beautiful paved greenway for bikers, runners and walkers. Note...it is not a rail trail, there are hills! We did a YouTube video of our ride that you can find on our channel, Bent on Bike Trails.

Beautiful Fall Riding

October, 2020 by dsmyers1969

We rode the trail from Galax to Pulaski and back in 3 days. The trail is very beautiful flat on the Galax end and slight inclines on the Pulaski side. The gravel surface was in good shape and the restrooms are well maintained. My favorite section was the Fries spur. D Myers

Greenbrier River Trail

Great trail!

If you come with realistic expectations, you will love this trail. If you expect perfectly groomed trail with multiple towns and cell phone service all of the time, I'd suggest you try something a little tamer. This trail is for those who crave solitude and beauty and don't mind if they have to pay a small price for it. I actually found the track to be pretty good, yes there are some bumps and puddles here and there but more the exception than the rule. Rode the trail from Cass to Caldwell as part of a longer trip and really enjoyed it despite some rain on the 2nd day. I really liked the Cass to Marlinton section as well as the last 10 miles or so into Caldwell. Overall this is a great experience well worth your time.
